Lemmings 'live-development' gets pushed off a cliff

Sony sends a cease and desist letter
Wed Jun 30 2010, 11:33

A GROUP of developers who successfully ported the Lemmings source code from Palm OS to the Iphone and Palm Pre in less than 24 hours have received a letter from Sony's legal department.

The developers were a bit surprised to find out that, rather than thanking them for getting its famous Lemmings game to the great unwashed on Apple's shiny toys, Sony thought their accomplishment harmed its intellectual property.

The developers' blog said, "as much as we would love to have this title reach everyone, we have unfortunately been contacted and instructed by Sony's intellectual property and legal department to remove our Lemmings conversion from our websites and distribution channels."

It continued, "while [we] did this as a tribute to the game - we can only hope that Sony actually does a conversion for platforms like iPhone and Palm Pre in the near future."

Meanwhile the developers say that they will be chatting with Sony to "explore the rights for these platforms."

We wish them luck. Sony has pushed bigger lemmings off cliffs before. µ

Would they have incurred the legal wrath of Sony...

...if instead of (as I believe was the case) releasing the entire game - executable, graphics, audio and all - they'd instead followed the lead of the guys who did the Windows Mobile/Pocket PC version, and released just the executable which required a copy of the data files from the PC version?

WTH

I was wondering what lemmings had to do with sony as when it came out they did not have a publishing arm, but it seems they bought the company that developed it first.

Ah well just change the name to "Suicidal Furry Creatures" and all good :D

Epic Fail

So they started working on a highly publicised port of a well known game without first getting permission to do said port? Idiots.

Regardless of whether Sony ever bother to do something with the franchise, it should have been obvious they wouldn't let a bunch of people hack together a port and give it away for free.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
