Nokia jibes at Apple over Iphone 4 issues

Our sides are hurting
Tue Jun 29 2010, 13:20

FINNISH PHONE MAKER Nokia has decided to shame Apple by publishing a blog post in which is discusses how best to hold a mobile phone.

The post follows complaints that holding an Iphone can reduce call signals and network reception, something that has prompted Steve Jobs to suggest that users try holding their Iphones the 'right' way.

Nokia titles its feature, "How do you hold your Nokia?" and to begin with ever so slightly ribs Steve and the Iphone user base.

Nokia researchers, it says, have uncovered four kinds of grip: the classic 'thumb and finger' approach which makes use of the opposable thumb; the 'cup' which uses the whole hand; the 'balance' which is like the cup, but allows for the use of a qwerty keyboard, and; the 'four edge grip' which resembles the manner in which you might try and hold on to a snapping turtle.

Of course, this is all for yucks and is designed to highlight the signal issues that the Iphone 4 has.

In case anyone was still in any doubt, Nokia explained, "We've found any of the four grips mentioned above to be both comfortable and as you can see, offer no signal degradation whatsoever. This isn't a feature you'll only find on high-end Nokia devices either. It's something that's been a part of pretty much every Nokia device ever made."

Belabouring the point, Nokia goes on to add, "One of the main things we've found about the 1 billion plus Nokia devices that are in use today is that when making a phone call, people generally tend to hold their phone like a... well, like a phone."

About three paragraphs too late, it leaves us with, "Of course, feel free to ignore all of the above because realistically, you're free to hold your Nokia device any way you like. And you won't suffer any signal loss. Cool, huh?"

Somehow we doubt Steve Jobs finds it funny. µ

Hmmmm...

Such a shame that smart phones are marginally smarter than some of their users. If there is only one issue with a phone, then it's salvalgeable - however, if the issue stops it from being used as a phone then what's the point of it?

Who wants a £500 iPod? Not me.

Is this the turning of the tide for Apple?

Nokia

This is nokia taking the mic as per apples jokes at microsoft, there having a laugh at others expense people need to see thats what it is.

For those critical then think of the numbers, maybe some of nokia phones have had a problem over the years but when you compare how many phone designs and phones made by nokia and apple, apple have designed and made 4 phone designs total, nokia sell approx 90 million phones a qtr apple are meant to have sold a total of 50 million iphones, when you pay top dollar for a device you expect quality and good design, apple did not think this design through.

It's a phone. If it cant call it's not. So, iPhone is a "smart". Srry to all of the iPhone4 users (never had the problem in 3gs myself) bt hey, nokia is right.

IF YOU BELIEVE JOBS-

You are a moron. I don't like to insult people but there is a limit to what people should tolerate. Nokia, has dropped the ball in technology but has a valid point. If I were to buy such a pitiful device and did not know it was less than acceptable I would return immediately. If you tolerate this crap you probably deserve it. While Apple has made some nice hardware over the years this seems to be more like a joke than a decent cell phone. Is Job's trying to prove something?

Nokia is no different

I have a iPhone 3GS and i experience the exact same symtoms consistently. If i hold it naturally covering the lower left (with either hand) then i watch my signal drop to 0 bars and then "searching". This problem has always been there, its just now brought to the forefront because the new iPhone 4 brags about the stainless antenna and competeing Droid phones are dimensionally large enough to address the attenuation problem that most smaller phones have. I had two different Nokias and a small Samsung (before my iPhone) that i complained numeriously to ATT that I would lose my signal when I picked it up in my hand and they kept telling that they were upgrading towers and you have to reboot your phone. This solution never worked. I think ATT just has bad cell service overall especially in Chicago and most phone manufactures have not figured out a way to engineer an antenna internally in a tiny phone that does require a slide out antenna or stub(remember those?). Larger and thicker phones will always have the upper hand (no pun intended) in signal strength.
Don't get me wrong... the phone part is only about 10% of what i use the phone and the rest of the features is what is really use the phone for and they very intuitive and functional.

I device a year...

@airmanchairman

I suppose if Nokia had announced 4 phones since 2007 any of them had signal issues. Or maybe would, but that is not the funny part in this article.

But please hold your phone as you want, but let us rest laugh at you if we want.

Humor

Fanbois have no sense of humor, which is why they become offended when their fearless leader's products are criticized. Seriously, it's funny as hell that 1.7 million people bought a product that, when "held wrong', drops signal and Apple's solution is to SELL the idiots a rubber bumper to solve a design flaw? LOL!!!!!

Talk about the Kettle vs the Pot

Nokia obviously has selective memory about their own phones :-)
Although I could remember seeing this over the years on other handsets , I thought I would do a quick check to see if there was any pre-existing videos about. It didn't take long to find some. These are not recent either, most of them were posted month's or even years ago!
Here's a few examples of specifically reception drops when holding various handsets:

zero brain activity

apple fanboi tempraments boil over at the prospect of using a capital letter in the wrong place
they are consumed by bitterness and their vision is tunnelled by a small piece of plastic with circuitry inside

talk about being possessed!

these mindless morons need help to form a personality and a life so we shouldnt be too hard on them. (even though its fun to see the nerd rage in full swing! haha)

RE: pain

You know what's even funnier? When some idiot can't see the humour in something fairly funny, when someone is so much a fanboi that instead of seeing the humour in it he has to defend Steve Jobs against "big mean companies" No one can deny that Apple did something right, but that doesn't change that the fact that you can buy a 500$ phone from Apple and you can't hold it like you would hold a phone because they didn't check the damn thing! And The mighty Steve Job's solution is to hold it differently, he screwed up, not the user who holds it. Oh and it doesn't change either that Nokia still has like 10 times more mobile devices in use compared to Apple.

But in the end, where in this article did it say that Nokia claimed Apple did everything wrong?.. You're a fanboi and you can't even read news without you have to spew your fanboi bile at everything mentioning apple.

pain

funny to see how Nokia still focus on the unimportant, 3 years after Apple came out of nowhere and grabbed a major piece of the profit from the mobile market. Nokia can brag about marginally better call quality all they like, but the fact is that mobile devices are used less for talking these days. Apple must have been doing something right...
