IFFY PHONE SOFTWARE seems to be the order of the day as no mobile operating system is spared from a lack of qualification and testing.
As Iphone 4 users are grappling with duff screens, antennas and being upwards of 500 quid poorer, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has advised all its users not to upgrade to the latest version of the Iphone OS until a problem with Microsoft Exchange Calendar synchronisation is fixed.
The problem has left users who rely on Microsoft's communications server with completely blank calendars and spotty email synchronisation. Though Microsoft's Exchange server would typically be to blame, most of those posting on Apple's support forum are saying that the synchronisation issues only materialised after Iphone OS 4 was installed. Mind you, given that other Iphone 4 users can't even get reliable wireless radio connectivity, the barefaced cheek of users complaining at being unable to access such luxuries as email and calendars is appalling.
Apple isn’t the only outfit putting out pants software. T-Mobile had to pull an update that would have brought Android 2.1 to its G2 Touch handset, simply saying that some of its customers "were experiencing issues when installing this." The firm offered no other details or when the update will be available again.
Finally, Motorola Droid and Milestone users will have to wait until the end of July to be brought up to Android 2.2. The best-selling Android handsets had been updated to Android 2.1 earlier this year and users will be hoping that Motorola doesn't incur the same delays with this upgrade.
The company has started its over-the-air roll-out of the update to Nexus One users, bringing with it support for Adobe's Flash software, wireless hotspot creation and tethering.
Given that smartphones are increasingly being relied upon by users to undertake tasks that were once the sole preserve of desktops, it is perhaps time that handset manufacturers apply similar software quality assurance and auditing procedures to ensure that users aren't left with crippled devices following updates. µ
I had problems syncing with Exchange for a long time and I am a Windows Mobile user. It seems to be fixed in 6.5, but if MS have trouble getting it working, it seems a bit unreasonable to come down too hard on Apple. Oh ..., and USB sync is still to unreliable to use on Windows Mobile.
I'd still rather be an Apple user.
We are seeing successes and failures for people accessing mail/calendar. There seems to be no rhyme or reason. My 3GS is fine. Others are not. No rhyme or reason to the failures.
Most beautiful and expensive brick in the world - The iBrick 4 :-)
does it wipe out the calendar clean or does it just mean it cant read ?
I upgraded my 3GS to iOS4 with great excitement...just to watch my Exchange go down in flames.
Poor email sync, can't sent, can't find server.
Then I got my shiny new iPhone 4, an improvement, due to speed improvements it fails faster than my 3GS. Wife's phone is similarly effected. Seems to work for a bit then crap out.
iPad still on 3.x works perfectly. I'm on Exchange 2007.
This is my favorite iPhone quote since all the hoopla started:
"Mind you, given that other Iphone 4 users can't even get reliable wireless radio connectivity, the barefaced cheek of users complaining at being unable to access such luxuries as email and calendars is appalling."
I am having no problem whatsoever with Exchange email or calendaring. On Exchange 7.x
Like the important point of which versions of exchange it's broken for?
