Iphone OS 4 gets jailbroken

Shiny toys are set free
Fri Jun 25 2010, 14:41

IT DIDN'T TAKE LONG for the clever chaps at the Iphone Dev-Team to bust open Steve Jobs' locked down Iphone OS 4 (IOS4).

The latest Apple operating system for the Iphone and Ipad was cracked even before the Iphone 4 hit the shelves, with the Dev Team releasing and even having time to update its Pwnagetool. The tool isn't able to remove the carrier lock, however it can activate and jailbreak devices running IOS4.

The team is, as always, cautious in its recommendation for its handiwork, saying that users "shouldn't have upgraded your devices if you have previously relied on our tools for hacktivation and/or a carrier unlock."

Even with such a caveat, many Iphone users are claiming success, though it is vital that those looking to free themselves from the walled garden of Apple's App Store first read the instructions.

A similar Windows application has also been released under the Sn0wbreeze moniker. Both Pwnagetool and Sn0wbreeze work in similar ways, in that they create custom IPSW files on the target device to circumvent Apple's restrictions. Users with older Iphone OS devices such as the first Iphone, Ipod Touch and the third-generation Ipod Touch are warned not to upgrade.

Though a software unlock has yet to be announced, in the past it hasn't taken the talented coders long to hack Jobs' Mob's mobile OS, raising the question of just how hardened is the Iphone OS? µ

Unlocking and Jailbreaking the iPhone 4

Unfortunately, the reason a lot of people are confused is because they don't know the terminology. For example, some people confuse bootloader with iBoot and bootrom. Check this link:

After reading that you will see that the main problem is the bootrom.

Need greater terminology specificity

I could be mistaken, but I think there's some mixed terminology being used here.

Yes, a *carrier unlock* was released called ultraSn0w - allowing use of applicable iphones with any mobile phone service provider.

But I think the article is referring to the method of jailbreaking. Rather than installing the official iOS4 and then using software to jailbreak that installation, the only way to currently get jailbroken iOS4 is to use pwnagetool/sn0wbreeze to create a jailbroken iOS4 backup file - which can then be restored to the iphone.

Sadly for me, there are many restrictions on this method preventing me from applying it to my iphone 3Gs - you need "old bootrom", "non-MC model number", "previously jailbroken, but not using Spirit jailbreak" ... so I'm currently left with the choice of [Spirit] jailbreaking my 3.1.3 (and unlocking with ultraSn0w) or else updating to a non-jailbroken iOS4 and being stuck unjailbroken (which I think can't then be unlocked by ultraSn0w - or can it?)

...until or unless someone can develop a jailbreak software for existing iOS4 installation - a "software unlock" I think this is what they mean.

Unlock Available

The unlock was actually released 3 days ago, it's called ultrsn0w 0.93 and it unlocks firmware 3.1.3 to iOS4.0
