Chrome gets Flash

Google and Adobe are working where Apple refuses to go
Fri Jun 25 2010, 14:08

OPEN SOURCE OS Chrome has been updated to version 5.0.375.86.

Previously users had to download and install a separate plug-in for Adobe Flash on Chrome. Now Adobe and Google have worked together so users can use Youtube to watch videos without installing a plug-in.

"The integrated flash player has been enabled by default," blogged Anthony Laforge of the Google Chrome team.

This is the first time Flash has been released as part of Chrome's "Stable Channel", so it's also the first time it has been out of Beta, meaning it's ready for general use.

The update comes hot on the heels of Adobe and Google's mutually beneficially working partnership on Flash 10.1. We reported earlier this week that Android 2.2 smartphones will probably get Adobe's new Flash 10.1 for mobiles ahead of the competition. µ

RE: LOL..

Safari != Chrome, or any other browser, to me that just proves that Apple can't code for shit, big surprise? Here's why, no matter what kind of fuckup I've had in Ubuntu with flash, and I've had a lot, never ever had it caused anything but the flash plugin to crash.
And having a phone that isn't being closed by it's creator, I do expect Flash to be optimized a lot better than you would be able to on the completely closed off Iphone or whatever useless product Apple has made.

Adobe won't pull a stunt like that because the last thing they need is Apple to feel threatened, and to release their OWN graphics production suite to supplant Adobe's. Adobe pretty much survives only because of a lack of real competition, not because of any real technical innovations in their products. You could see Adobe's dominance quickly eroded with product competition on par with what Final Cut Pro did to Adobe Premiere.

I actually hope Adobe tries their luck with Apple, and this is coming from a Windows user. I'm sick of Adobe's shoddy, overpriced products; competition is always healthy.

Adobe, Apple

I don't get why Adobe don't just decide to stop releasing software for Mac or release it several months behind the Windows version.

There are entire industries founded on the combination of Adobe and Mac. Slowing releases is sure to put a crimp in Apple's sales to these industries, and thus put enough pressure on the megalomaniacal man in charge.

This would, in due time get Apple to negotiate with Adobe, and the ip(od/ad/one)'s would get flash.

Its about time someone used THEIR market power to show Apple they're not the only boss in town.

Flash Sucks

Except for You Tube, Flash is nothing but a resource hogging advertisement platform. I will stick with Firefox with Flashblock and yes on a Macbook Pro.

LOL..

Anyone else think it's amusing to see this article next to the one titled "Adobe rushes out...Flash fixes..Too serious to wait". LOL!

BTW, Kim-Leo...it's been reported just today that Flash 10.1 for Mac has a serious bug that results in a gradual and increasing slowdown of Safari scrolling requiring a system restart. The solution right now is to downgrade to version 10.0...but I guess you're just a "butthurt" Flash fantatic and ignore all that heh? Flash on your phone? Be careful what you wish for!

RE: Too bad...

lol.. Aren't you just a butthurt Apple fanatic that makes random accusations? This will not slow down your browser!

@santi

I believe the article is talking about Chrome OS, not the browser. And you can uninstall the flash plugin for any browser so your comment is confusing every which way you look at it.

Too bad...

Too bad... I was very happy with using a flash-free fast internet with Chrome... I'll have to go back to Firefox.
