RECOVERING PHONE MAKER Motorola has announced its Droid X smartphone, which the company said it will launch in the US on the Verizon network on 15 July.

The Droid X sports a 4.3-inch touchscreen and supports both DLNA and HDMI connections. It has an 8 megapixel camera capable of recording HD video.

The smartphone has a 1GHz CPU with 8GB of built-in storage and a MicroSD slot. It will run the Android 2.2 OS, including Adobe Flash 10.1, both of which are expected to appear this summer.

"We are breaking down barriers so that you can experience the web the way it was meant to be and create, share and view content like never before, either in your hand or in your home," said Motorola mobile devices executive Sanjay Jha.

"Enterprise users will also find Droid X appealing with features including push e-mail and live widgets for e-mail and calendar updates."

The Droid X handset will retail at Verizon for $299.99 with a two year contract, discounted to $199.99 though a mail-in rebate.

There was no word about making the Droid X available internationally. µ
