Microsoft shows off Internet Explorer 9

With HTML5 support, hardware acceleration
Thu Jun 24 2010, 08:38

TRYING TO CATCH UP, Microsoft previewed its Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) web browser for the press.

The Vole highlighted IE9's support for hardware acceleration, which lets it use the GPU to speed page loading and rendering of graphics effects, as well as HTML5 support.

Microsoft said IE9 demonstrates better performance of its Canvas 2D feature, which uses hardware acceleration to deliver better performance and higher framerates.

"By using more of the underlying operating system, and taking advantage of the power of the whole PC, IE9 enables developers to do more with HTML5," said Internet Explorer general manager Dean Hachamovitch in a blog post.

"Running through Windows, instead of just on Windows, makes a big difference; the web runs more like a native application."

Other improvements to the Vole's web browser include faster Javascript and better handling and formatting of fonts.

Duh

So "running through LoseDoze" is a GOOD thing? Of course this doesn't open any security holes as big as a semi-truck for malware to run thru. Nothing to see here, move along.

The demise of the Internet is complete

We've gone from text browsers to browsers which uses a GPU which is more powerful than processors of 5 years ago to render a friggen web page.

Congrats, you win Google, Apple, and others. You made the browser into a damned virtualized operating system. I hope you're happy, it's the biggest waste of resources since Bonzai Buddy.

"Running through Windows" gives one a pane in the neck.

M$ seems to be admitting that they previously "re-invented wheels" by duplicating function in the browser that's already in the OS. It's probably either that the IE team didn't trust the API, or available functions are so vast that no one even knows the general outlines.

BTW IE sucks...

IE sucks very bad, that's the idea I realize every time I try to use it. I left IE a long time ago. First I used Avant and I got away with the interface and then used Firefox and get completely away from IE.

If you're an IE user take some time and test Firefox/Opera/Chrome/Safari a try. After that if you still wanted to use IE then you are REAL IE user and not a forced one.
