Beta developers' kit Skypes everything

Anytime, anyplace, anywhere
Wed Jun 23 2010, 15:02

VOIP AND CHAT OUTFIT Skype has announced a Skypekit Beta programme designed to put Skype on almost anything that connects to the Internet.

Skypekit connects Skype anytime, anyplace, anywhere. It was developed to connect any Internet device, application or website to Skype. It was also engineered to give a taste of Skype to open source software environments.

Skype foresees a future of interconnected devices ranging from tablets, games consoles and photo-frames to cars and watches, all Skyped to the max in a utopian - or dystopian, depending upon your point of view - universal Skypocracy.

The big move for the company was moving away from Skype desktop enviroments into consumer electronics. The company admits that its Skype Public API is only usable with PC based clients. However, Skypekit is a "headless" version of Skype that the outfit claims will be able to run on any hardware or software environment through appropriately developed applications.

Skype has obviously seen the free benefits of working in open source, where it has more freedom to expand its proprietary peer-to-peer based network interconnections.

Skypekit is currently available for Linux, then will come out for Windows and Mac developers in a few weeks. µ

I hope developers are looking at a Skype app for all Android phone users, not crippled and available for select networks only.
