AMD releases Lisbon chips for the cloud

Cheap as chips at less than $100

X86 CHIP DESIGN HOUSE AMD has kneed Intel in its cloud computing range by releasing a line of microprocessors for cloud computing servers that are very affordable.

The processors are called the Opteron 4100 family and come in four-core and six-core variants. The chips have been code-named Lisbon while in development and are supposed to draw less power than their predecessors while achieving the same levels of performance.

One of the more interesting members of the range is the $99 Opteron 4122 processor, which is AMD's first server chip priced under $100. It is a quad-core that runs at 2.2GHz, has 8.6MB of cache and draws 75 watts of power. This really is a price cut versus Intel. Its cheapest server processor is priced at $167.

Lots of cloud based server rooms are experimenting with arrays of servers using inexpensive chips. AMD will need to prove that its Lisbon line of processors are scalable in this role.

However most of these arrays have been built using single-core chips. A recent release from Seamicro announced a server that packs 512 single-core Intel Atom processors into one server, for example.

A $99 quad-core Opteron will use more power than any low-power Atom chip. However it will offer a lot more computing power, too.

The Opteron 4100 lineup also includes two low power six-core chips, the Opteron 4162 EE and 4164 EE, that draw just 32 watts of power.

AMD claims that this is the lowest power threshold achieved by any generation of the company's server processors. The 4162 EE runs at 1.7GHz and will cost $316, while the 4164 EE runs at 1.8GHz and will set you back $698.

AMD also released five Opteron 4100-series six-core chips that draw between 50 watts and 75 watts. The chips run at speeds between 2.1GHz and 2.8GHz and start at $174. These models are aimed at single socket and dual socket servers.

All of the Opteron 4100 processors are built on the 45nm fab process and support DDR3 memory.

Acer, HP and Dell are expected to announce servers soon based around the Opteron 4100 line, AMD said. µ

Opteron Run More Stable & Smooth....

Server CPU Is Smooth & Powerful. In Home Desktop, due to less demands, can be Sweet. AMD released similar $99 opti last fall. ECC & Reg Are internal stabilizers.

How about Triple Channel, if Not in cpu & main, ddr2 be best bet, as ALL getting anyway in dual channel. Windows 64 -=7=-, still Linux is low buck stuff. server 2008, get variety, as learning never ends.

Choose that main Wisely. Remember Thousands of server bucks still add up to $500 retail machine, often. Windows Updates Is Hurling netframe 4.0 & 3.5 SP1, so stay up to date, smoother & smoother.

Well, always Thrift Machines for $50 & build Routered system from one internet connect, anos cost be High 2 Mb/s ALL Every need,Today.. maybe xp inside, those. yet for serious experience oriented, $99 is good atrat, next stuf that hacks leg off.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
