AT&T's privacy woes continue

Unfortunate exposures still embarrassing
Wed Jun 16 2010, 14:20

STILL GRUBBY from dealing with the Goatse security company, AT&T is battling fresh allegations that it is exposing customer data.

Last week the US telecom and mobile network operator was shamed by Goatse for having lax security. AT&T countered that the insecurity firm would have had to bend over backwards to perform the hack, something we suspect it is quite used to doing. But AT&T has now been fingered for revealing customers' data itself.

According to reports some users have expressed concerns and raised privacy complaints about the fact that they have been able to see other people's account information when buying or trying to buy an Iphone 4.

The Iphone has been selling like hot cakes and AT&T's and Apple's websites have both been struggling to meet customer demand. Sadly, where customers have got through they have apparently been exposed to other customers' orders and the like. This caused some of the more thoughtful of them to wonder if their own account details might also be vulnerable.

"We've received reports of customers inadvertently seeing [other customers'] account information during the Iphone 4 purchasing process," said AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel to Reuters.

Meanwhile AT&T's website is still buckling under the weight of people looking to buy Apple's latest smartphone. Although the pre-order page recommends that you order online to 'save time', it is currently unavailable. Still, that at least does save you some time. AT&Ts breaking news pages are still urging people to go forth and pre-order through its website, meaning that panicked shoppers will probably ping-pong between those two pages for most of the day before finally going to an Apple Store to get one in person.

Here in the UK Apple is running the risk of creating a buying frenzy as people desperate to upgrade their handset and enjoy the enormous life benefits it brings with it have been told that they will have to wait another week, until 2 July, before theirs is shipped. Before they only had to wait, with bated breath and barely concealed loathing for their current Iphone, until 24 June.

The unofficial INQUIRER Iphone Panic Buying Frenzy alarm clock has been advanced to 11:57 accordingly. µ

Most Orgs Enjoy Security as a Matter of Luck; Breaches Due to Human Errors, Poor Practices, etc.

Great article highlighting the need for everyone to have a much higher computer/data security awareness. Check a (free) blog, "The Business-Technology Weave" (can Google to it) - it reflects what this article is saying. The majority of breaches are due to human error, therefore awareness and common sense are key, in supporting all necessary best practices. The blog author also has a book we use at work, "I.T. WARS" (you can Google that too). It has a great Security chapter, and others that treat security. Highly recommended. Great stuff.

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
