Sony launches its Xperia X8 smartphone

Older Android OS takes a bow

MOBILE PHONE MAKER Sony Ericsson has released an Xperia X8 smartphone but didn't give it the latest Android operating system.

The company claims the Xperia X8 user interface is based on its older Xperia X10, with four corners for simpler one handed use and customisable touch access for applications.

We looked at the Xperia X10 in April and, like the newer X8, it has a Timescape social notworking feature. This shows messages, instant messages, emails, Twitter tweets and Facebook updates and can be scrolled through kinetically. Like the X10, the X8 runs the Android 'Donut' 1.6 version.

Bizarrely, Sony Ericsson's Xperia X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro smartphones are all being upgraded to run Android Éclair 2.1. However, the X8 is getting the mouldy old Android 1.6 Donut.

The lack of an Android upgrade for the Xperia X8 means it will miss out on HTML 5, Microsoft Exchange support and Bluetooth 2.1, amongst other things.

The Xperia X8 will have a 3-inch screen and a 3.2MP camera, pushmail and video recording. It will come in a range of colours including white, dark blue and white, aqua blue and white, pink and white or silver and white.

"We are delighted to be able to bring the full experience of our Xperia smartphones to new consumers by delivering a fully featured device at a more accessible price point," said Timo Maassmann, product marketing manager for the Xperia X8.

We asked Sony Ericsson why it is sticking with Android 1.6 for the Xperia X8 but haven't had an answer yet. We reckon it'll be because Android 2.1 will cost money to upgrade custom software.

The Xperia X10 has been on sale for a while and already has a raft of users waiting for the OS upgrade. Sony Ericsson will probably add a later Android flavour for the Xperia X8 when it gets around to doing that, or after X8 users start demanding it. µ

SMARTPHONES IS FOR DUMMIES

IF A SMART PHONE COSTS $80 A MONTH WHICH IS LIKE $1000 A YEAR, IT WOULD TAKE ONLY 10 YEARS TO SAVE $10,000 TO BUY A 2002 CADILLAC ELDORADO ETC WITH 300HP NORTHSTAR V8 AND BOSE AUDIO SYSTEM. THAT'S WHAT I DID IN NOVEMBER 2006. I'LL TAKE MY FAT MAN'S CAMARO OVER A WHOLE HEAP OF SMARTPHONES. MY LAST CELL PHONE WAS THE MOTOROLA STARTAC, ONLY MOMENTS BEFORE THE DAWN OF THE SMARTPHONE REVOLUTION, AND I RECYCLED THAT JUNK ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO - HAVE NEVER LOOKED BACK.

San Francisco, California, likely will become the first U.S. city to require cell phone companies to disclose how much radiation their gadgets emit.

The city's board of supervisors voted 10-1 on Tuesday in favor of a law that would require handset makers to post in stores how much wireless radiation their phones give off, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Mayor Gavin Newsom is expected to sign the measure into law.

The city says consumers can use the information to differentiate between cell phones that emit relatively low and high levels of radiation.

Some researchers link those emissions to cancer and brain tumors,

Mouldy old Android 1.6 Donut?

I love your turn of phrase for a 9 month old OS update and calling it "mouldy" - I realise it's a play on the name "donut", but if an OS that's 9 months old is that bad, then iOS3 (on the current iPhones) is positively disgusting as it's a whole year old!

It's up to Sony which version of the OS they release for each handset, and if you look at other manufacturers (like Dell with the Streak) still use 1.6, and they're waiting for Froyo rather than jumping on Eclair.

"Sony Ericsson will probably add a later Android flavour for the Xperia X8 when it gets around to doing that, or after X8 users start demanding it."
I don't think that "users start demanding it" means anything to manufacturers - just look at HTC Hero, it's still on 1.5, and so far they've pretty much "refused" to upgrade to any later OS. I know several people who have been waiting over a year for an upgrade!
