BACKUP YOUR DATA because the second of two HTC Hero updates to upgrade the phone to Android 2.1 will wipe the handset, says its manufacturer.
The first update to bring Android 2.1, also known as Éclair, to the Hero is underway with a second and final update to take place before the end of this month. Only once that is downloaded and installed will the phone have the Android 2.1 OS.
This second update is so large that HTC said, "we would advise using a WiFi connection for this download to avoid additional data charges." The updates, detected when Hero automatically checks for software updates, will be pushed to users' phones and they will be asked to accept the over the air change.
Users of HTC's Desire and Droid Incredible models and its future Evo 4G and MyTouch slide products might be offered updates to Android 2.2, Froyo. HTC intends to announce a full list of updates for Froyo later this year with the updates expected to take place before year end. µ
entertainment oh yeah you guys are hilarious for arguing about something so petty.......I think everyone should have there data backed up no matter what you never know, you guys really trust these phones that much? what if the next time you drop your phone it breaks and you lose everything you ever had with that phone contacts you’ve collected for years music photos and whatever else is on there your going to think to yourself and back to this comment and say to yourself I should have backed up my stuff now its all gone WahWahWahWah........also heads up HTC has a ROM upgrade, check it out, claims that it will wipe your data also......go figure
Give it up, we all know you are just some butthurt Apple fanatics that have been sent on the Jobs Jihad on Theinq.
The article is correct.
What is wrong with Dave's post? Let's try reading the article again.
"Android 2.1 will wipe the handset."
Wipe, as in no data whatsoever.
Dave says that's not correct as it will not erase your SD card, so your music, photos, or whatever else is on the card is safe.
He didn't say that some data wouldn't be lost. Matter of fact he specifically states what data will be lost.
To then claim that he is saying "don't backup your data" is putting words into his mouth.
Besides, his point is that more detail is needed. HE isn't the one posting an article, the INQ is. The least they can do is be more accurate, as simply stating that the handset is "wiped" is misleading.
when i read the article, it implied to me that all phone data would be wiped, as in totally erased.
this is not the case.
so eff off.
Dave,
You are concluding that data does not need to be backed up because some data is already backed up. Fail.
If you have contacts synched through google and will use that feature to restore your contacts, then what you've really done is used Google to 'back up' your contacts. And the phone may re-install apps but not app data. Like the article says, back up data because it will be wiped.
Also, the article never said that the upgrade will wipe the SD card. Please read the article carefully and understand what it's really saying, i.e. Please do some research
Sorry, the Inq is right! He is saying backup as the data will be wiped out? YOU are wrong. The data is wiped out right? Yes or no? SOME people with Google or Exchange will recover the data once it is sync'ed but not EVERYONE will. My mother in law uses her Droid on Yahoo primarily (even though it's terribly broken on pre 2.1) So, yes DO BACKUP before you do this update. Sheesh.
Once again, your journalism misses the mark and misinforms.
The update will only wipe your installed applications and any associated application data, along with your voice and text message history and logs.
Since the Hero is a google phone, most people have their contacts synced with google so those are restored automatically with your device. The Market also knows which applications you had previously purchased and installed so installing those back is easy.
Your SD card data is left perfectly intact so your music and photo libraries will all be there after the upgrade. Please do some research.
