INQ goes all Android

Reaches for open source goodness
Fri Jun 11 2010, 17:22

MOBILE HANDSET MAKER INQ has announced that it will be ditching operating environment Brew and going to an all Android handset line-up.

The firm which specialises in making "socially aware" mobile phones told Gigaom that it was moving away from Qualcomm's operating system and going to join the ranks of HTC, Motorola, Samsung, LG and SonyEricsson and load Google's open source Android operating system on its devices.

Last year Motorola displayed what can be done with Android and social notworking when it introduced the Motoblur interface for its Cliq handset. That impressive bit of software helped Motorola get sales back in line after years of dodgy handsets. INQ are hoping that something similar will happen as it tries to push away from the value market and play with the big boys.

While the company may not carry the cachet of HTC or SonyEricsson, it has managed to shift 1.5 million of its INQ Chat devices which is far from shabby given that most people haven't heard of the outfit.

Though Steve Jobs won't be losing much sleep on hearing that a relatively unknown handset maker is jumping on the Android bandwagon, the sheer number of handsets that will be running the operating system will be a boon for developers. That in turn may force Jobs to ease the restrictions placed on developers to get applications onto the App Store.

For INQ, its main objective is to create devices around current Internet applications and presumably the open source and lower deployment costs of Android means that the switch was a no brainer.

Qualcomm must be wondering how many more developers will be jumping ship in the coming months. µ

RV for what?

Comparing an RV to a Phone is stupid. The only advantage is you can technically get laid in an RV and not a phone cuz it's too small. But, i don't think that's something Shouter has to worry about. I don't think cattle and sheep can fit into an RV, so he'll have to get laid around the barnyard.

Although, a smartphone can store a lot of late night booty calls, and you can take pictures of the ho's so you can remember which one it is when you're about to drunk dial, or know when to hit the ignore button when one you don't want to talk to is ringing you up. Also, you can use your new HTC Evo 4g to record the two twins stripping in your room in 720p and then plug it in HDMI to your TV to proove to your homies you had a threesome. Not to mention, when drunk ladies flash you in a bar, you can snap a pic, and immediately share it with all your male brethren on Facebook, all without having to put your beer down, if you're crafty. Yet again, i doubt all that applies to Shouter...

I think really you're saying "RV for sale."

"Also garage lease, reasonable rate."

I too found the name of Inq on this site quite confusing. But the devices sound... okay.

LOL RV Guy

@Shouter - LOL forget about what it costs to store that thing, what does it cost you to pull that thing out of the driveway in fuel... LOL

It's certainly not electric.. What is the MPG on that sum-bitc? 3mpg.. 5mpg.. .lol

Driving it to your destination costs more than 10 years of cell phone..

Happy Rv'ing.. And Shouting..

You guys are making phones now?

INQ, y'all are makin mobiles now?
I kid, I kid... I did think The Inquirer had gone all Android when I just saw the title, though.

@RV guy aka Shouter: What does your RV do for you during the time it's in storage? Does your RV have an app for anything you could possibly ever want to do? Can your RV make video calls, or take a picture and send it to anywhere in the world on a moments notice? Can you carry your RV in your pocket all day, then take it out and watch any movie or television show you want on it at will? Can your RV do text & instant messaging or email? Does your RV have a capacitive multi-touch screen which you can use for a million and one things?

The list of things a modern smartphone can do, which your RV cannot do, could fill volumes.

Not to mention that if you count every electronic component contained in a smartphone (individual PN junctions on the microchips, etc...); then the smartphone has hundreds of times as many components as an RV does - and they're all packed into a space several thousand times smaller.

Egan is right too - you'd be better off spending that $600 (plus the hundreds of dollars in fuel that thing must guzzle when you take it on a trip) a year on a real vacation.

Open Source=Good

Apple, AT&T, Microsoft, now Google = Bad.
The list of bad, spying overpriced tech keeps growing. My example is Lucid Lynx is faster, better and FREE. Open source might be the only safe place to be. I used to like Apple and Google but now I don't trust either. Where there's money to be made there's GREED and they will do anything to make money.

good point, but

What does that RV you pay to garage do for you during the 11.5 months per year that you pay to store it?
Do you go hang out in and around it, in its dank and dark cinderblock warehouse?
Hmm, that's $575 your burning per year, over and above what you paid for the RV.
Then you pay only $25 to be independent for two weeks out of the year in some transient vacation trailer park that is somewhere warm, rather than spend $600 on airfare and a hotel in a nice resort.
Yeah shouter, you've got it figured out.

32 FOOT RV

I HAVE A 32 FOOT LONG RV THAT COSTS ME $50 A MONTH TO PARK IT IN SECURED STORAGE, WHICH IS CHEAPER THAN MOST SMART PHONE PLANS INCLUDING OPEN SOURCE ANDROID. MESSAGE TO INQ: YOU CAN KEEP YOUR MORON TOYS. MESSAGE TO MORONS WITH SMART PHONES: ON SECOND THOUGHT, WHY WASTE MY BREATH.
