Spotify hits television

Swedes and Finns will get it first

MUSIC STREAMING SERVICE Spotify has launched an application for television sets in Sweden and Finland.

We cannot even begin to imagine what television is like in either of those countries, but we suspect that the addition of Spotify will only improve it. According to Spotify it will launch its service on the Nordic Teliasonera stations, granting some 120,000 viewers access to its streaming music.

Only premium Spotify users who are based in either Sweden or Finland can use Spotify on the telly, but judging by statements released by the firm the service could roll out further.

Last year Spotify launched its mobile app on the Iphone as well as the Android and Symbian smartphone operating systems, and today Daniel Ek, co-founder and CEO of the firm said, "Introducing Spotify into the living room is a major step forward in our continued efforts to make Spotify available wherever you are".

Jim Butcher, head of communications at Spotify echoed this when we asked about a UK rollout, saying, "We're receiving a lot of interest from a number of consumer electronics providers, including TV companies, in the UK and beyond. Giving Spotify users access to music in the living room is important to us and our deal with TeliaSonera is just the first step." µ
