Google slams Apple over ads policy

SEARCH ENGINE OUTFIT Google has swung its handbag at Apple over the shiny toymaker's new advertising rules.

Google said that the new rules would effectively prevent the Internet search and advertising giant from placing ads using Iphone applications.

Writing in his blog, Omar Hamoui said that Apple's terms of service for application developers would bar Admob or Google advertising on the smartphones.

Apple has developed its own advertising platform, Iad, which allows software developers or ad agencies to embed ads directly into applications being offered for the Iphone, the Ipod Touch and the Ipad.

Apple will sell and host the ads and give developers 60 per cent of the revenue while keeping the remaining 40 per cent.

But Hamoui said that Apple's terms of service prohibit applications developers from using Admob and Google's other advertising channels.

The terms prohibit Google and other firms like Microsoft from collecting user location data from applications running on the Iphone. This means that mobile advertisers can't use targeted adverts, he said.

He claimed that the change is not in the best interests of users or developers. "Artificial barriers to competition hurt users and developers and, in the long run, stall technological progress," he said. µ

Well, I don't know where you get your info, but no government in history that I know of was working in the interests of the people. One way or the other they are always working in favour of the dominant class (be it either aristocracy, nobility or business men) - of course this can benefit the whole population, but usually it does not.

I'd rather gov't beat both down.

Both are clearly creating not walled gardens but entire empires with walls, moving into areas far outside any reasonable corporate charter. Let's hope that before advertising becomes much more pervasive and invasive that the anti-trust department wakes up. The only alternative to corporate tyranny is for the gov't to keep them off our necks, that's what we hire them for. I don't hold out much hope for this, as gov't has ceased being honorable servants of the public, and now serve only moneyed interests.

Eat the Apple to beat it.

Perhaps Apple is restrictive. But to beat them in their own game, perhaps Google needs to launch their own iTunes store. Currently there is nothing in the market which can give the same level of user experience with Music & Movies download.

Android app market is building up but the level of experience from Apple platform is fantastic.

Why won't people buy Apple products and they be restrictive in their Add policy.
