Panasonic will ship its 152-inch 3D TV this year

JAPANESE ELECTRONICS MAKER Panasonic has announced that it will start shipping its monstrous 152-inch 3D telly this autumn.

First shown off at CES where just about every display vendor went mad for 3D, Panasonic's plasma screen supports 3D and has a resolution of 4096x2160. Panasonic is, perhaps unsurprisingly given the $500,000 price tag, aiming the screen at commercial digital signage firms rather than wannabe hip-hop "artistes".

Although the set does have the headline figure of 4096 pixels along the x-axis, the screen isn't natively '4K', though it does get pretty close to the 'digital cinema' version of the standard, which is specified as being either 4096×1714 or 3996×2160.

As vendors try to shift 3D TVs, they are aware that customers are unlikely to spend thousands of pounds if there's nothing to view. So those who decide to splash out the cash on buying what will most likely be the single biggest contributor to global warming will be relieved to know that Sony has announced a partnership with Imax and The Discovery Channel to start the first round-the-clock 3D TV channel, although the announcement lacked an on-air date.

Earlier this year Panasonic announced it will be sponsoring 3D channels in the US, however the announcement didn't mention any UK channels. As customers realise that wearing a pair of tasteless plastic glasses doesn't contribute much to the ultimate viewing experience, vendors are seemingly hoping that trying to kick start 3D content is the way to flog these sets.

The wait for suitable viewing content gives extremely wealthy punters with a half million to spare on a TV the opportunity to build an expansive lounge to fit Panasonic's gas giant. µ

Clueless people reviewing TV's

"As customers realise that wearing a pair of tasteless plastic glasses doesn't contribute much to the ultimate viewing experience"

The only people who say things like this usually have ZERO understanding of the technology and seem to think that glassless (autostereoscopic) TV's are just around the corner. And they also don't understand the major limitations of these sets. Not to mention they seem to all be little fashion diva's.

Wearing 3D glasses has nothing to do with it being a fashion statement! They are no more of a bother than regular sun glasses. Do you also worry about going out when the sun is out because yo have to wear sun glasses? Well, 3D is watched in your home, ( but it's probably mommy's basement in your case), few will notice you are wearing them. Also it's "REALIZE" not "REALISE". OMG, idiot!

random info

This resolution (4096x2160 pixels) is also used on some Samsung screens, then called "SuperVision technology".

2160p resolution = 3840 x 2160 pixels.

4kW of power

+/- 1kW i estimate. Plus 6kW +/- 2 kW for cooling the house, total 7-13 kWh addition to your energy bill every hour.

Great resolution though. All 30-32" monitors have to have that resolution already to qualify for idiotic name "retina display"

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
