China defends its firewall

Gotta keep the Mongols out

THE GLORIOUS People's Republic of China has defended its use of Internet censorship, also known as the Great Firewall of China.

The government has released a white paper on the Internet in China. It said that censorship is needed to ensure state security and cautioned other nations to respect it.

The report said that China "advocates the exertion of technical means" in line with existing laws and international norms "to prevent and curb the harmful effects of illegal information on state security, the public interest and minors."

What it wants deleted from the web ranges from sites connected to "instigating racial hatred or discrimination and jeopardising ethnic unity" to gambling, violence and obscenity.

The upshot is that the Great Firewall of China blocks access to any content the government deems unacceptable, ranging from pornography to political dissent.

The white paper said that filtering "guarantees the citizen's freedom of speech on the Internet as well as the public's right to know, to participate, to be heard and to oversee".

Unfortunately it then suggested that honourable foreigners should shut up about the matter.

"Within Chinese territory, the Internet is under the jurisdiction of Chinese sovereignty. The Internet sovereignty of China should be respected and protected," the government said.

The report praised the Internet as an "engine promoting the economic development of China" and said the country's leaders "frequently log onto the Internet to get to know the people's wishes" and participate in online chats with users.

Well the use of the words "leaders" is a bit inaccurate. Only Chinese premier Wen Jiabao, who likes to appear more a man of the people than his colleagues in the Communist Party hierarchy, has done a few web chats. µ

He's right

I not only work in China, I live here too.. for a decade.

It's the most dishonest place on earth.

There are things about it that you wouldn't believe because they're too shocking; you'd just assume I was being a racist foreigner.

I also feel safe and welcome here, but that's because I'm a foreign expert and I live in a secure walled compound and am well paid.

Erik, I think you're naive.

The first poster is actually correct. Chinese people will lie, cheat, steal, defraud and anything else it takes to get money.

By the time the rest of world realizes that poisonous toothpaste, drywall, pet food, wall filler, milk, candy, sweets etc are not aberrations but the way Chinese do business it'll be too late. The US had its problems but god help us all when China becomes the world's #1 Superpower .. and it will, in less than 20 years.

Oh no!

Yes, it would be unthinkable that other countries with their own culture and sophisticated history will have other views on the world. I think we should send in the moral brigade of the USA and their NATO vassals to correct this wrong!
It would be utterly wrong to respect and honor ideas of an other country.

I have worked in China and I have never felt more safe and welcome. It would be very shortsighted to complain about things like the firewall when the people do not care about this.

second try

Goddammit, just strip HTML tag already don't mess up my post, I repeat:

No one else wants to say it? Then I will. The [insert any present country] government will lie, cheat, steal, and murder if it thinks it will give it an edge on the rest of the world. It's internet policy is just one facet of that plan. Wake up world: we all have a problem, and it's name is [insert any present country] imperialism.

Adopted.

(They are completely right incidentally, it IS the norm)

China = Moral Vacuum

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
