Motorola announces a high end Milestone smartphone

10.2Mbps HSPA and an HD 720p video camera

US PHONE MANUFACTURER Motorola has announced a high end Android smartphone that it claims is one of the most powerful available, capable of supporting HSPA networks at speeds up to 10.2Mbps and recording HD video.

Motorola's Milestone XT720 is due out later this month and follows the Flipout that the company announced last week. The latest Milestone XT720 model targets those wanting a high-performance handset for work and personal use.

Like the Flipout, the Milestone XT720 runs the Android 2.1 OS rather than the latest 2.2 version, but it lacks the Flipout's Motoblur user environment.

No carrier has yet been signed up for the new handset, so at first it will be available SIM-free only through resellers like Expansys.

The XT720 is designed for "real-world performance and good high-speed Internet browsing", according to Motorola mobile device marketing director Tom Satchwell. It supports HSPA download speeds up to 10.2Mbps and 5.76Mbps upstream.

Other features include a 3.7-inch 480x854 touchscreen and an 8 megapixel camera with Xenon flash, which is a first on an Android handset, according to Motorola.

The camera can also shoot 720p high-definition video, and an HDMI out port on the device allows users to display videos on a TV or monitor.

Other specifications include GPS, Bluetooth, quad-band voice support, and an accelerometer to switch the screen orientation in apps such as the web browser.

The handset does not have a slide-out Qwerty keyboard like the previous Milestone model, but it's slimmer at 10.9mm and weighs 160g.

For business users, the XT720 also includes Activesync support to link with Microsoft Exchange mail systems, plus Quickoffice for viewing Office document attachments. µ

High End?!

You mean 6 months ago? The Milestone 2 (Shadow) is high end now, IF they release it NOW. Again, they will probarly sit there and wait for 6-12 months, to wait for the thing to get outdated, then releases...

Another locked phone

And no doubt just like the original Milestone it will have a locked bootloader - negating the point of Android being open. Motorola have fooled me once, they won't manage the same trick twice.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
