TIN BOX FLOGGER Dell's Streak tablet phone will be coming to a Carphone Warehouse near you.
The Carphone Warehouse has announced that it will carry Dell's Streak on the O2 mobile network in the UK from June 4.
The Iphone-baiting Streak will be free on a £25 a month contract with mobile broadband, for free on a £35 a month contract with voice and unlimited data or for a standalone price of £429.
"The Dell Streak represents the start of a very exciting technological advancement," said Andrew Harrison, CEO of Carphone Warehouse. "The move into tablets means we can offer our customers the functionality of laptops combined with the portability of mobile phones, creating an entirely new range of products that will allow our customers to stay connected on the go."
"The Dell Streak hits the sweet spot between traditional smartphones and larger-screen tablets. Its unique size provides people new ways to enjoy, connect, and navigate their lives," said Ron Garriques, president of Dell communication solutions group.
On paper, Dell's Streak looks like an interesting proposition. We got our hands on a unit last week during the Open Mobile Summit. It has a 1GHz Snapdragon processor with WiFi, 3G, Bluetooth, a 5 megapixel autofocus camera and expandable MicroSD card storage to supplement the 2GB onboard storage.
What the Streak will also give punters is support for future Internet plug-ins like Flash 10.1. Now, who hasn't got that? µ
Fantastic device ,i have one it does fit in my pocket has a very nice screen which allows me to use it without a magnifying glass unlike some of the other types of phones with web browsing.
In reply to Dale - What's the point:
Too big for a phone and too small for a tablet. All apple-egos have been stroking the iphone as a mobile replacement for surfing, talking, texting, e-reading and video watching for 2 years. Then they put out a glorified chalkboard that plays videos, but the alternative non-apple model is all wrong???
An Amazon Kindle has a 6.7 inch lcd. So 5 inches is really close and will read well at a respectable font. It fits in your pocket. So you can use it as a phone. The screen allows you to surf w/o pinch-zooming to death, runs flash, has a front & back camera.
The ipad cannot do calls, doesn't have a forward facing camera, cannot load a full document suite(only their bastardized, slimmed down basic) version, won't allow multiple actions and has fewer I/O's to force you to purchase another unit in 9 months rather than designing into it now and no flash.
If anything is a glorified over priced video player, it is the ipad.
Apple is a great marketer. I am only surprised they haven't started selling snake oil as a cure all by now.
I work for a Fortune 100 IT company and ipad is NOT the choice IMHO.
Dell Streak is a revolutionary product as it is the first time that something of this type has been launched. You can get more info on this at www.NDChronicle.com
Dell have well and truly missed the opportunity with this, its far to big to be a smart phone, way to small to be a tablet, so that leaves it as either a portable video player or a sat nav.
By pricing it at £429, its way to expensive to be either, Archos make pvp's far far cheaper and a 7" satnav can be picked up on fleabay for well under half the amount.
I provide remote IT supports, so iPad it still is then...
