No need to use developing countries

WHILE CHIPMAKERS have been stepping up production in cheaper developing countries, it seems that AMD's Globalfoundries spinoff is going flat out with its plants in Dresden and New York.

According to Market Watch, Globalfoundries said it plans to boost chip output from its plant in Dresden, Germany to 80,000 wafers a month in the next two years from 60,000 currently.

The company also said that its New York plant is on track for mass production in early 2013. It is wants to make 60,000 wafers a month there once the fab is fully up and running.

Chia Song Hwee, Globalfoundries' chief operating officer said that with an aggressive capacity plan it will be able to get chips to market faster.

Globalfoundries, based in Silicon Valley, bought Singapore-based contract chip maker CSMI last year for $1.8 billion in cash. µ
