DESPITE MEEGO being a Linux based operating system created in a collaboration between Nokia and Intel, the Finnish phone company does not expect its first device powered by the software to use an Intel processor.

Speaking to The INQUIRER at the Open Mobile Summit in London Nokia's Meego computing vice president Alberto Torres expects his company to have its first device ready for the market later this year. Torres emphasised "rich multimedia" as a key feature for the device. µ

Media device?

Okay well thats a little disappointing, they could at least use the ion platform.
Media to me is accelerated video and opengl.
I got nothing agaist arm at all, but i think too many companies are using the wrong os for arm. Arm has a great os made for arm that is old and is still being updated.
"RISC OS 5 is a fast and efficient light weight operating system designed for 32-bit ARM compatible processors.
Based in flash ROM, RISC OS 5 includes an intuitive multi-tasking graphical interface with features such as anti-aliasing, Unicode font handling, drag 'n drop and an object centric filing system.
There are many powerful applications available for RISC OS 5 including graphical design, Vector and Bitmap, DTP and office productivity. Also straight forward cross-platform networking and file sharing, web serving, ICA client, telnet, FTP etc."

It does indeed look

as though here is a computer device company that really takes security seriously, to the point of blacking out the identity of their spokesman. (Or was it his personal request? Surely not!)

@Francis

What are you on about? This article is about Nokia using an ARM chip in a product even though it is working on the OS the device uses with Intel.

MS has nothing to do with this at all.

You're not related to the Drashek "react to one word and post random garbage" bot are you?

Better Without Windows

Windows stuffs up these little devices.

Using MeeGo or other versions of Linux will make the devices run much faster, with a lower RAM and harddrive footprint.

So by rejecting the slow and bloated Microsoft Windows, the units will run more efficiently for less cost.

When people buy netbooks, they should ask for a Linux version.
