UK punters get Ipads a day early

Fanbois love Apple even more
Thu May 27 2010, 12:18

TALK OF THE RELEASE of the Ipad in the UK has so far concerned delays, but according to excited Apple fanbois on Twitter, some of them have got the much-hyped Apple toy a day early.

Craig Le Grice, a brand and digital strategist gushed, "My Ipad arrived! A day early. Just as I was leaving the house. I'm a happy boy again :)."

And Hilary Sutcliffe crowed, "My Ipad has just arrived!! Will bring it to Cambridge to make you all jealous!!."

Other messages on Twitter have quickly spread the fact that people around the country have finally got hold of the device that they have paid shedloads of their hard earned shillings for.

From this it seems that Apple has gotten over the supply problems that dogged the international launch and meant that Ipads arrived here later than they should have.

The Ipad was originally forecast to be available in the UK for late April, but due to issues that Apple never disclosed, unless you believe that demand was so high in the US that it couldn't honour its scheduled Ipad roll-out to Europe, it was forced to delay the release by a month.

And judging from the response on Twitter, it has been a successful marketing ploy, with the hype and build-up of Apple love causing an explosion of pleasure simply because its sent the device one day before it was expected. µ

Congratulations, Silverburn...

...on completely ignoring the point. The point is not that making Apple products makes people commit suicide (although *using* some of them definitely contributes towards my occasional suicidal thoughts). The point is that Apple (a company that tries to appear so squeeky clean it won't let its clients see titties in Bild's or Stern's iPad apps and rejects software because it allows people to search for "Kama Sutra") is knowingly taking advantage of China's sweatshop culture to maximise its profits.

Comparing the suicide rate among Foxconn employees to the chinese national average is meaningless (and there are some fundamental statistical flaws in the article you linked to, but nevermind, that's not the point). The point is to compare the suicide rates with those of people doing similar jobs in other countries, and decide if you want to give your money to companies (like Apple, Dell, etc.) that sponsor and perpetuate the chinese "production model".

If the iPad factory (which is owned by Foxconn but essentially run by Apple) was located in the USA, do you have any doubt that there would be a full investigation into this?

Yeah, Ipad changes everything.

From: What do Apple fanboys do besides sit and admire their sleek toys? To: What do they do with their Ipad besides try to make adults jealous of it?

Hey, look at me! I have an Ipad!

Stats pt.2...

Errr, yes. Scale out the number of foxconn employees vs total population and bingo. So why shouldn't I quote population figures?

You could get into a debate about statistical clustering, environmental conditions etc, but this still reeks of a media trying to fan some feeble flames into a good story.

Maybe after some investigative journalism, something truly significant will come out - but at the moment, there's nothing here.

Stats

...didn't I read somewhere that the suicide rate is not that significant when compared to normal per-head-of-capita figures?

Shame....

Glad you're happy with it OP.

Now just think of all the people that have commited suicide working at the factory where it was made.

Me, too...

Yes, I got my iPad today - now all sync'd up, it's looking very smooth and snappy. But you won't find me crowing about it on the web. Uh...
