GAMES CONSOLE MAKER Sony has developed a super-flexible 80µm thick 4.1-inch 121 pixels-per-inch OTFT driven full colour OLED display.
The technology is so flexible it can be wrapped around a thin cylinder, which is handy if you want to see your computer screen on your pencil.
Sony said it developed OTFTs with a new organic semiconductor material that have eight times the current modulation of conventional OTFTs. It managed this by integrating the technologies of OTFTs and OLEDs on an ultra-thin 20µm thick flexible substrate and soft organic insulators for all the insulators in the integration circuit.
The screen can be safely and repeatedly rolled-up - around a cylinder with a radius of 4mm. It can even be stretched.
The technology will be shown off tomorrow at the Society for Information Display 2010 International Symposium in Seattle. µ
Sounds great, until nobody can make them because Sony looks to rape all manufacturers to 'license' the tech and overcharge for their own kit. So, then basically, it will die, kind of like Mini Disc and Memory Stick and every single other tech patent Sony secures.
Oh yeah, and didn't they make an 11" OLED screen for $3000 like 2-3 years ago and demo a small flexible screen a few years ago? Oh but how are those techs doing? Oh I know, they make more money charging a buttload for large screen TV's with never increasing resolutions and by simply adding small features like 120 hz frame interpolation, a "240 hz" blinking light behind the screen, and unrealized overhyped/overcharged tech like 3D (like most TV "manufacturers"). When internet downloads/streaming finishes off removable media and Blu ray licensing fees diminish, Sony is in deep crap. That company has been off track for way too long now. Maybe they should go into producing television commercials, their Playstation commercials are about the only good thing they got right now, IMO

Nope not impressed ..not until they make a condom out of it!!!
I saw these screens on a CBS news report on future technologies about 6 years ago. Very cool that we're nearing the release of such an amazing technology. I almost feel bad for the poor saps who buy 3d tv's right now. Oh, you poor, yet rich, folks. That expensive 3d set will be getting dusty in your spare bedroom in a matter of a couple years, if not a few months lol.
Since that show was on in the fricking 80s, before cell phones were even on people's minds, it's proven to be an obvious concept.
My thoughts exactly. Although I doubt the cell network would give you the same high quality and smooth framerates as you see on the show.
Like the one in Mission to Mars (that they use as a map)
Cool! But no pics?
Shame!
Watch the TV show called Earth Final Conflict and you will see the purpose of these flexible displays. I'll give you a hint, check out the video cell phones.
