JAPANESE IMAGING GIANT Canon is putting plans to develop surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED) flat panel technology on hold because it's too expensive to manufacture.
The company said it couldn't do the math to bring the cost of production down to make it economically viable. It claimed that the development of SED, an alternative to plasma and LCD screens, will be put on hold but research will continue.
"Canon has put its plans to develop home-use SED-based television products on hold, but will continue related research and development activities," a Canon spokesperson told The INQUIRER.
"Making use of the ultra-high-resolution image quality realized by SED technology, Canon will target the development of displays for educational and professional-use applications," he continued.
Canon and Toshiba started developing SED in 1999 to create a more energy efficient and pin-sharp display. Unfortunately, Canon said it couldn't yet afford to compete in the LCD space, probably without charging £20,000 for an 11-inch screen.
Canon maintained that it wasn't abandoning it's commitment to produce a SED flat panel, some day.
It's a shame Canon that didn't do a Sony, that is, think "What the hey?" and release it as a technological showpiece loss leader, just because it could. µ
Yes SED would be nice by all accounts but do Canon really have the scale and intensity of research capability that this would require?
Perhaps they should consort with other companies, pool resources and share profits, that kind of thing.
It would bring the tech to market quicker, would be better for you and me and possibly them since leading the way with a market standard is probably better than monopolising a market niche.
that it will make it to the market as a mastering monitor someday.
Good God - the answer is just too obvious: put an Apple branding on it and take it to market!
This is a real shame. SED is a fantastic technology.

Gee, maybe the author just figured out why Canon made a profit last year and Sony didn't.
