Android 2.2 rolls out

Weekend presents
Mon May 24 2010, 13:27

MOBILE DEVICE SOFTWARE DEVELOPER Google has started rolling out Android 2.2, the latest version of its operating system for smartphones, netbooks and tablet PCs.

Some Nexus One users started to notice that the latest version updated itself over the weekend.

People had been expecting Google to do a roll-out in the next few weeks after the outfit tweeted the announcement last week. The early installation surprised quite a few.

However not everyone has got it yet and it will be staggered over a couple of weeks. Although if you want to manually install a build there is nothing to stop you.

Android 2.2 has a number of improvements although the one that is first noticed is the speed.

Sadly the new EVO 4G, which Google gave to all attendees at Google I/O, which runs a customized Sense build of Android, is not going to have 2.2 for a while and has gone from cutting edge to slightly back-level in just a week. µ

Drivers

It's a pity Google don't copy Microsoft's driver model.
Ie, the OS is separate to the drivers.
Would cut out all the crap with Samsung who can't be bothered supporting their customers.

<samsung "Oh you already paid us? We're sorry, but our obligation to you as a customer ended the minute the money was banked."

<customers "Oh, so that's your attitude? After telling all my friends to get this Samsung phone on the premise that the OS could and would be updated, you're now leaving us with buggy old software that cannot be upgraded and is losing compatibility by the day? Good luck ever getting another sale out of me. TV, fridge, whatever it is, I wont buy it simply because of your attitude."

Open source is great, but the irony is that Windows is the benchmark in compatibility and upgradability.
I _have_ (back in the day) installed Windows XP on a 486 for a laugh. It also runs perfectly on my Core 2 Quad.
In both cases, drivers were inbuilt or obtainable easily.

Sadly I cannot say the same for Android.
One only has to look at all the homebrew Eclaire ROMs that barely work.

G1 user

Looks like I'll have to remain in the dark ages with my G1, unless cyanogen can make a modded rom. :(

FAST!

Manually installed yesterday morning (Nexus One in the UK from Google)
Benchmark increase from 6.8 Mflops to 38!
By comparison the iPhone 3GS clocks in at a measly 5.
Dabs of polish applied in many places as well as the major new features (tethering, Flash...)
