IN THE WAKE of the Google I/O developers conference in San Francisco last week, a couple of colleagues have reflected on what the Internet search and lots of other things company has done very well, and not so well, during its rise over the past ten years.
From its dominance of online searching through Google Earth and Maps to its engagement with and later disentanglement from China, Google has both had great success and made some mistakes. You can follow the link to read about what developments our colleagues think have been which at the Top 10 best and worst of Google. µ
SV Guy, if one can judge an internet company by its interface something does seem to be going wrong at google, considering the stupid and unecessary redesigns of perfectly functional websearch pages make it harder to get what you want instead of easier... It does have that feel of the deckchair shuffle.
IMHO I wonder if the goodwill bubble of enlightenend self interest which previously went along with googles image of new age internet industry has been punctured by the realpolitiks of departmental competition and management self promotion.
One intuits that maybe their corporate moral compass was somehow disoriented by the tussle with China, cause it sure isnt pointing the same way as mine any more.
Capuccino anyone?
Wow, somebody is seriously not paying attention.
Yes, Google has lovely benefits. It's also a sweat shop, and it practices rampant age discrimination. Management is by fiat.
All these things "work" because the company has a fantastically profitable search business - somewhat like how Microsoft had terribly disfunctional management but made money via its Windows monopoly.
You can always tell from the INQ "article" title that it's going to be another shameless plug for that failed top-10 list site.
