Asus puts Kindle on its PCs

Amazon fights Apple with free distribution
Mon May 24 2010, 11:53

TAIWANESE PC COMPANY Asus has announced that it is putting Kindle onto its netbooks and notebooks.

The deal will apply to Asus laptops that are sold by Amazon and have extended battery life of up to 11 hours.

Ben Thacker, a VP of sales and product management for Asus in North America, said that the outfit had been badgered by its customers wanting the software. It is not something that many would think about contacting a PC maker about but we will take his word for it.

However it is interesting that Amazon appears to be countering Apple's Ipad and its deals with newspapers by offering the Kindle OS to any company that asks for it.

It looking like Amazon has worked out that the Kindle is a means to an end. If it can get the software onto other hardware it can make money flogging books. µ

Author mistaking Kindle OS for Kindle App?

I think the author is misinformed. He claims that "Amazon appears to be countering Apple's Ipad and its deals with newspapers by offering the Kindle OS to any company that asks for it."

Isn't it more likely that Amazon is simply pre-loading it's Kindle Reader application for Windows onto "Asus laptops that are sold by Amazon", rather than running a one-off operating system? Given that the Kindle is so different from standard netbook hardware, I doubt Amazon ported the "Kindle OS" to netbook hardware.

You can get Kindle for any Windows computer at www.amazon.com/gp/kindle/pc

not a bad idea.

And pretty soon we will see another mickey mouse os running as the primary os. They will strap phone, voip, apps, music, video, and even games. If people consider an Iphone a serious console, then the kindle os will do just as well.
But seriously, amazon has it right.
Free always beats payper*.
