FLOGGER OF EXPENSIVE PRINTER INK HP has laid down its marker for the rest of 2010 by revealing it plans to flog projectors and tablet devices.
Talking to Digitimes, HP's vice president and manager of PCs, Monty Wong, said that the US firm will concentrate on pushing two mini projectors and tablets, which according to Wong could overlap nicely.
Talking of mini projectors, Wong said that there "should not be a technical issue" with incorporating the projectors into other devices such as handsets and laptops. In the past 18 months, 'pico-projectors' from other firms such as 3M have been made possible by using tiny DLP chips from Texas Instruments.
Such small imaging chips have brought forward the possibility of mobile phones with projectors built-in. While the technology is still relatively immature, the possibilities are clear. However Wong said that HP isn't looking to release a hybrid phone with a projector in it this year.
Moving back to the second half of 2010, Wong said that the largest PC manufacturer is concentrating on tablet devices with "keyboard-less" designs. This correlates with the design that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer held aloft at CES in January. Given that reports have surfaced of an HP tablet running WebOS and with Wong's admission, it's highly likely that the design of any such device won't be a radical departure from what was shown almost six months ago.
Wong did however put a dampener on the HP WebOS honeymoon by saying that the company is unlikely to promote "non Wintel" products aggressively, due to incompatibility issues with Windows applications. This not only rubbishes comments from other HP employees but it also means that any upcoming HP tablet will only run Windows 7 and will be saddled with the associated security and price burdens that entails.
Given that the California based computer company spent a boat load of cash acquiring Palm to get its mitts on WebOS, Wong's statement does a good job of clouding matters on quite why HP went to such great lengths to outbid several other firms for Palm.
Nevertheless, his announcement regarding HP's plans to sell projectors could mean that HP is looking to supplement its healthy revenue stream from overpriced print cartridges with sales of equally overpriced replacement mini projector bulbs. µ

Thats right! Pico Projectors is nothing new, and till this day have always been mediorcre at best. This is going to change very soon when Microvision's PicoP goes main stream. I am talking about a laser based projector thats blows everything else away. No focusing, DVD quality, no bulbs to change, bright. Eventually it will replace the dashboard of your car with a HUD display among the aplication for this product. I am laughing because this is the first time I see something that is going to be big before anyone realizes it, but dont rely on me, just youtube it and see for yourself.
Check out Microvision's laser PicoP. NO FOCUSING needed. Curved surfaces, angled surfaces, etc.etc.
Move the PicoP from 12" to 100" and it stays in focus.
Check it out before buying a DLP, LCOS, or any "panel" type projector.
Since when have pico projectors been something new? Its just an lcd with a big backlight and a lens.
Dare I say "The chinese have been pumping them out at an affordable price for a long time now"
3M does not use DLP. 3M is using Displaytech's panel which was bought by Micron. 3M is now looking to use Syndiant's display panel.
here is the best sight for a collection of info on pico projectors.

its that or on the Yahoo Stock Message board - MVIS. or the MVIS investor board (a Yahoo Group Message Board)
Sounds like WebOS will be kept for the IPAQ replacements. Although saying which I would guess HP will be installing it on most notebooks and tablets as probably a dual boot option in a similar way Acer's using Android at the moment.
Want an instant browsing, music player or something, click and your on. Want features, boot Windows.
@sad,
the ipad is brilliant? Do you mean a brilliant FAIL? How can you cripple something with Windows? It supports about 1,000,000 times more programs/games than Apple products (that's not an exaggeration either), not to mention all the open source code. You don't and wont get that from apple products.
As to the projectors, I have been waiting over 3 years for these tiny projectors to finally come to market. First one with at least 1024 * 768 resolution that comes out, i"m buying it!
I like tablets. The iPad is brilliant. Too bad HP is going to cripple their tablet with Windows. They should be using WebOS, a far more sensible and reliable choice. After all, why did they buy Palm, if not for the WebOS?
