Acer announces the Aspire 1825PT notebook

But look, the display rotates
Wed May 19 2010, 17:34

IT'S A BIRD, IT'S A PLANE, no its neither of those, but Acer says its Aspire 1825PT is a notebook, tablet and digital photo frame in one, albeit an expensive one.

Available now for £699.99 including VAT, before the UK government hikes that up, it comes in the glossy colours of Sapphire Blue, Diamond Black or Ruby Red. Acer says, "it boasts a high-brightness Acer CineCrystal" 11.6-inch TFT LCD backlit panel with 1366x768 resolution display with a 16:9 aspect ratio for 720p high definition content. But the really cool bit is the fact that the display can be rotated. What fun.

As for how long it can play HD with an 8-hour battery life, on standby one assumes, is anyone's guess. The notebook cum tablet has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor with up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, a Mobile Intel GS45 Express chipset with an Intel 4500MD graphics media accelerator and Direct X10. It also has up to 320GB of storage and multi-in-one card reader support.

The 1825PT has a touchscreen that allows users to play video and music files by dragging them onto a "virtual wall", surf the web with its "touch optimised" browser and type in the odd note to self with Touchmemo.

The rotating display can be folded over for what Acer calls tablet mode, but it does not explain why this is any better than a normal notebook.

The 1825PT also has WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G connectivity, surprise surprise. Despite the emphasis on the touchscreen it also has a full size keyboard that has a multi-gesture touchpad. It also has both D-Sub and HDMI video ports. µ

This sounds very similar to the Acer Aspire 1420P (aka the "PDC Laptop")

This sounds similar, if not identical in guts, to the Acer Aspire 1420P, which has only seem very limited retail time despite many being given away last November at Microsoft's 2009 PDC event. More details on that laptop can be found on google or at http://microsoftpdc.com/tablet . It sports an 11" display, rotates, has a core 2 duo, max of 8GB, and pretty much everything else mentioned in this article although it sounds like the chipset MIGHT be different (aka different graphics, not that either one are any good).

For what it's worth, tablet mode on it is pretty much worthless - kinda like what you would expect on a tablet. But that's just me. ;-)

It's a tablet that happens to include a keyboard.

And may be, unlike the first set of Microsoft Tablet PCs such a long time ago, -not- a machine that is so careful with the battery that processing power and memory are cut back to favour uptime.

My brothers and sisters, a tablet with useable real-time speech recognition is your birthright. Rise up and claim it now.

SOUNDS LIKE MY KIND OF MACHINE

I'D PAY UP TO $600 CANADIAN FOR ONE, IF I DIDN'T HAVE AN OVERABUNDANCE OF COMPUTER POWER ALREADY.
