HP plans tablet and printer applications

After Palm then other things

IN AN EARNINGS ANNOUNCEMENT, Mark Hurd, chairman and CEO of HP, said that following its $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm, it will seek to broaden its range of products and software.

In the call, Hurd said that he was excited about HPs future, which he said promises to be significantly improved by the purchase.

Presumably, HP has seen Palm as fit for it for a while now, either that or it wants to capitalise on smartphone sales and other new products. "In Q2,we announced our intent to acquire Palm in order to enhance our intellectual property in the fast growing and profitable connected mobility space," he said.

"After closing the acquisition we expect to leverage WebOS in the apps store beyond smartphones... such as slates and web connected printers."

In the earnings report HP announced that total printer unit shipments grew by 9 per cent and consumer units by 15 per cent. The ability to check your Facebook status while printing a document is surely likely to send these numbers into the stratosphere. µ

BEOS come back!

Anyone remember that on November 12, 2001, Be’s stockholders approved the sale of substantially all of its intellectual property and other technology assets to Palm, Inc.
Could HP bring back BEOS?

tablet

Nice to see that they won't cripple their tablet with Windows, as other manufacturers have done. WebOS would make a great tablet OS.

Do you think the move was justified?
