AU OPTRONICS says that you can't blame the Greeks if LCD panels are in short supply.
Many analysts think that because the Euro has fallen because of the Greek debt crisis, that might stop punters from buying. If it did, that would mean that there would be plenty of product to go around and everyone who wanted a flat screen would be able to get one.
But Au Optronics chairman K. Y. Lee told the Reuters Global Technology Summit that there will be shortages until halfway through the year.
He said that new laptops and thinner TV models with power-saving LED backlights are selling well worldwide, and Au's early investment in the new technology helps it add value.
A keen cyclist, chairman Lee said customers want large numbers of panels, but he was not able to deliver. Funny how you can spend a fortune on a product but always have to get it home in a taxi yourself.
Lee said that the supply of monitor panels for tellies is tight, and for notebooks especially tighter. So far the weak Euro has not slowed demand.
Major LCD makers in Asia have reported brisk demand recently as economies recover, with China leading the way. However, some analysts say the sector might be saddled with oversupply later this year if display manufacturers make too many of them.
Au wants to set up a new LCD factory in China, with an investment of about $3 billion. There will be a lot of tellies sold in China apparently.
As a supplier to brands such as Dell and Sony, Au expects the Taiwan government to give it a go-ahead by the end of the year and it plans to add up to 1,000 new workers in the factory, Lee said. µ
...but WTF has him being a keen cyclist got to do with this article?
Good high quality comment code here. It strips greater than signs instead of escaping them.
My previous comment should read '[equal or greater than] 2560...'
As long as they're restricting monitors to 1080p, there can be a shortage as much as they want. My old monitors do much nicer resolutions.
I'll not be buying a new monitor until = 2560x1600 is affordable in no bigger than 24".
they can have all the shortage they want in regular lcd panels.. i am waiting for a pixel qi panel in a tablet form.
So far it looks like notion ink's adam is the one for me, if they ever get around to mass production at a decent price point.
I even considered apple's kool aid but the glossy screen and battery life was a big disappointment for me (seriously, only ~10 hours max, even when reading ebooks??!).
