FOR COLLECTORS OF TABLETS, the Android powered Archos 8 will be available in the UK in the second half of this year, not long after the June release of its sibling Archos 7, which also uses the Google OS.

While the Archos 7, which will be available from June for £129.99, is an updated version of the 2008 released Archos 7 320GB model, although updated with the Android OS and improved battery life, the Archos 8 is not only designed for web browsing, social networks and video but also acts as a picture frame.

However, the Archos 7 can provide 7 hours of video playback and 44 hours of music, compared to 4 hours and 12 hours, respectively, for the earlier version.

The company did not quote battery life figures for Archos 8 or provide a UK price.

However the portable media player company told The INQUIRER, "the Archos 8 will be coming very soon after the 7, this year".

The Archos 9, already available in the UK, is a tablet with an 8.9-inch display that runs Windows 7. Declaring its Archos 7 and Archos 8 models the largest Android tablets available, with screen widths of 7-inches and 8-inches respectively, the company says its Archos 8 tablet is 12mm thick, weighs 0.4kg and comes with 4GB of storage compared to the Archos 7's 8GB.

The Archos 7 is also 12mm thick but weighs only 0.35kg. It offers always-on connectivity to the internet, pre-installed apps including an e-book reader, an instant messaging platform and a range of daily newspaper feeds. It also has access to the Android Marketplace application store and can output 720p video to a television.

Both the Archos 7 and Archos 8 have 800x480 displays and the Archos 7 has a USB connection, unlike the Ipad, by the way, which should make transferring files much simpler. µ

Why are we not talking about the new model?

Windows SEVEN Starter Edition is o-kay, it doesn't have a limited simultaneous app count. It's like Vista's Basic edition. (And the Basic 7 is like Vista's Starter Edition.) But the Archos 9 is widely received as underpowered for Windows, and also for video playback and gaming. A pity - but then I still use a Samsung Q1 every day, with isn't zippy.

So do you mean to say that the Archos 8 doesn't have a USB port, or are the sevens, eights, nines, and Andrroids getting confused at this point?

It's Win7 Starter Edition

I believe that's win7 starter edition. I wouldn't recommend that to my worst enemy.

Not an iPad beater

I don't like iPad, but the thing it seems to have going for it, mainly, is that it is fairly speedy, has good battery life and can play videos with relative ease.

The Archos 9 on amazon has reviews commenting on it being slow, unresponsive, and taking an age to start up.

There is still no credible threat to the iPad, and any such though that there might be is delusional.
