Apple announces international Ipad pricing

Snake oil tablet will be out by June
Fri May 07 2010, 14:10

OVERSIZED PDA MAKER Apple has announced international prices for its latest toy, the Ipad.

UK punters will be able to pre-order the Ipad from this Monday for one penny shy of £430. That investment will get you the 16GB version, chuck another £60 on top and you can get yourself the 32GB version, or, cancel your holiday plans and opt for the £599 64GB version.

This is assuming of course that you want WiFi, but not 3G or anything else common like that. Combined 3G and WiFi models will lessen the kid's university fund to the tune of £529 for 16GB, £599 for 32GB and £699 for the 64GB version.

Apple's release came just after we noticed that tech retailer, Advancetech put up its pre-order information for the Ipad. Advancetech did however, mirror Apple's prices exactly.

Bargain hunters, or those of a sensible disposition, would be better advised to buy a netbook, and then set fire to £200 if they're still determined to squander the full price of an Ipad.

The Ipad will be released in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK on the 28th May. µ

That's probably the most spectacularly stupid post that I've seen here. I assume that you also refuse to buy any laptop with an on-screen clock because you can ask any passing stranger for the time?

Firstly 3G/GPS is an OPTION that can be added to the base model if you want (you don't need to spend £700 to get it). Secondly locating nearby coffee shops is a single example of the kind of things that developers can do with location services. Thirdly devices like the iPad are there to allow you to consume internet and media while at your coffee shop or similar. Fourthly they're not much bigger and heavier than a decent book so you're unlikely to be seriously encumbered by carrying one.

Good luck with your App development idea. You may find one or two technical problems (like the lack of a camera in the iPad), though you could try staring at yourself in a mirror which would give you a similar image.

If you want to spend £700 on a gadget that can tell you where you are, good on you. I'm absolutely certain the way it makes you feel to be in possession of such a gadget will be worth every penny.

The next time I want to find a coffee, I'll just have a wander around or ask someone. That's more my kind of lifestyle experience, it doesn't weigh down my pockets and it doesn't cost any money!

I think someone should write an app for the iPad that lets women hold it between their legs and get a clear view of their fanny on the screen. It would be another innovative use for this wonderful gadget.

Three obvious flaws with your logic re GPS there. Firstly you may not always know (with any degree of precision that is) where you are. Being able to locate yourself while out and about is a useful capability (if you don't want to take an iPad with you while out and about then there's no need to splash the extra cash on the 3G version).

Secondly while YOU PERSONALLY may know where you are, application software on the machine doesn't without GPS or similar. Once applications can locate your position you have a whole raft of useful capabilities available.

Thirdly it is perfectly legal to use these devices for in-car navigation (otherwise all GPS navigation systems would be illegal). They may be a little larger than is customary, but otherwise they can provide exactly the same functionality.

If your personal needs are to type large quantities of data then feel free to buy a netbook of your choice, but don't assume this is everyones, or even most people's requirement. This is obvious from the lack of keyboard quality of a sizeable proportion of netbook designs.

Why would I want GPS in a netbook, Ipad, or even a laptop ? I know where it is, sitting on my lap, and unless I am unfathomably stupid, I know where I am. You can't use any of them while you are driving (legally), so it is of more use to big brother/business to track what I do, when I do it, and where I am when doing it. Not a great deal of use to me.
Personally I would rather have the EEE keyboard than the Ipad, but if I am having to shell out my hard earned currency, then probably neither, and will stick to my old laptop.

Yes but, the flash memory in Ipads and Ipods are not the same as what you get in the super fast SSDs of actual computers. They're slow and rubbish, like pen drives.

@Ray Carling

I'd guess that you've never used a PC with a SSD then. They're still much more expensive than conventional hard disks, but the performance you get from them is much more than the headline transfer speed numbers would indicate.

SSDs have reached the point of being big enough to hold most user's normal requirements (you can offload media storage to networked servers and conventional HDs) and prices are coming down to the point that people will at least consider them.

Your attempt to compare the most expensive, 3G equipped iPad with the cheapest netbooks (without 3G and without GPS) is laughable. Compare the iPad to tablet PCs with SSD storage for a more reasonable view on things. On that basis the iPad pricing isn't at all bad (or are you saying that all purchasers of tablet PCs are idiots also)?

There will always be a range of hardware on offer in any open market. The foolish person is he who believes that only the cheapest product will sell, and that the more expensive models are without merit.

How much?!

£700 for a closed system PDA that doesn't even have a keyboard?! ROTFLMAO.

Seriously, how many netbooks could you buy for that. Or even a laptop with a lot more than 64GB of slow storage.

You have to laugh at MacFanboys, don't you. If they had a pound for every unit of sense they possess, they'd be considerably poorer!

I'm the real shmuck for not selling them bags of magic beans and retiring to Barbados.

the mighty pound

So, the international price is in pounds ? Who said the UK lost its empire !?

No seriously, what about the other currencies ?
