Nokia admits it is losing ground

Will launch new smartphones
Fri May 07 2010, 09:57

FINNISH PHONE MAKER Nokia has admitted that it has lost the ball on the high-end mobile market.

Nokia chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo conceded that the company had "plenty of work to do," as its share price has slid faster than a well greased eel.

To fix the problem Kallasvuo said Nokia will launch new smartphones like the N8 to better compete with the Iphone and Blackberry.

At the moment Kallasvuo is watching his back as there is Finnish media speculation that he might be forced to step down as the company is seen as losing out against chief rivals.

Kallasvuo also admitted the Symbian operating system used in most of Nokia's phones had not managed to keep up with those of rivals, but said the company was "fixing this factor as we speak". He did not offer any details about the firm's cunning plan.

He did say that Nokia is looking at "creating fewer, competitive products that bring the features of Symbian-based smart phones to more and more people around the world", so that rules out dumping it, for now, we reckon. µ

A loosing hand.

It was always a case of "lost in the woods" for Nokia. They had all the elements and assets in place long before the Apples and Googles of the world stepped in, but they never knew what to make of it.

To the end of this day, i still think Nokia's fall is a outcome of the "close minded" Finn approach to things and inability to understand world markets at large. They seem to be getting a few pieces right... but in the overall context, theirs is the loosing hand.

all about market share

I agree with N900, its a shame they didnt learn from the n97 mistake.

I forget many times have i've really wanted to hurl my expensive n97 mini against a wall.

They've developed a nasty habit of releasing phones months before they should, its probably the last nokia phone i'll ever own.

At least they know when they fail

Nokia already failed to make good, competing phones when it released N97 - they admitted themselves that it was a mistake to release it in it's shape; and N900 - which could be a great phone but fails miserably because of crappy, beta-quality built-in software.
