Seagate releases Freeagent external hard drives

USB 3.0 upgradable
Wed May 05 2010, 11:20

HARD DRIVE MAKER Seagate has released a batch of Freeagent external storage units that squeeze a bit more from the venerable USB 2.0 link.

Dubbed Goflex, they are all plug-and-play gear with interchangeable cables and desktop adapters that allow each drive to adapt to the interface or device being used. GoFlex hard disk drives are also specially designed to provide interoperability between Microsoft and Mac kit.

The GoFlex interface cables are supposed to provide a bit more speed to USB 2.0 storage and backup devices and allow the units to be upgraded to USB 3.0, eSATA or FireWire 800 connections by switching out the cable adapter.

GoFlex ultra portable drives are available in 14.5mm and 22mm versions and include USB 2.0 cables. They are priced at $99.99 for 320GB, $129.99 for 500GB, $169.99 for 750GB and $199.99 for 1TB. µ

Tosh Announced 15 TB HDD....

Toshiba researchers presented a couple of papers concerning bit-patterned media (BPM) and associated head technologies at a Magnetism and Magnetic Materials Intermag conference in Washington DC. They have been working towards an areal density of 5Tbit/sq in for hard disk drives

If memory is Less than Mechanical, from Jan 2010:

Fabrication of Ridge-and Groove Servo Pattern Consisting Self-Assembled Dots for High-Density Bit Pattern Media" discussed how bit-patterned media (BPM) composed of 1 bit size magnetic dots on a recording surface was made in a self-assembly process. This achieved a 2.5Tbit/sq in density and the dots were laid out in tracks along with servo signal patterns.

A second paper discussed advanced read/write head technology and was called "MR Ratio and RA Design of CCP-GMR Film for Over 2Tb/in2 Read Sensors."

Toshiba has extended its Nano Contact Magneto-Resistive (NCMR) head technology to enable ultra-high sensitivity with a nano magnetic domain wall. The paper described research simulation results and key specifications of CCP-GMR (Current Confined Path - Giant Magneto-Resistance) and the resistance range for 2-to-5 Tbit/sq in NCMR heads.

On FreeAgent, Does Unit take vista or -=7=-. Most OLDer Back Up Blocks, Not only are poor, expensive & DO NOT do any other o/s outside xp. Found things near useless. Seagate closing out many lines for about 1/3 of list, including plenty of fREEAGENT Models. Be Warned: Might be cheapo special thats been going on for over two years at Rock Bottom prices from Seagate.

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
