Hackers free the Iphone and Ipad again

Giving Apple the right spirit
Tue May 04 2010, 11:31

HACKERS HAVE 'jailbroken' the Iphone 3GS and the Ipad so users can run software they like on the machines they have paid for, rather than what Steve Jobs says they should run.

The jailbreak dubbed "Spirit" can be applied to any Ipad, Iphone or Ipod Touch running firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3 or 3.2.

The jailbreak procedure has been posted on Youtube, showing that the hack provides a root shell with full access to the Ipad file system.

The group that wrote it is called the Dev Team, which is known for breaking into the Iphone OS and subsequently making the exploits public.

Of course Apple protects its users with super strong security, as it advertises that it is far more secure than Microsoft Windows, so it must be true. The Ipad was jailbroken three days after its release.

This latest effort allows users access to the digital equivalent of the Apple App Store called Cydia. The Cydia app store really sails up Steve Jobs' nasal passages because it provides software like "Backgrounder", which gives users the ability to run more than one application at once. This is something that users want and the hardware can provide but Steve Jobs says users can't have.

The "Spirit" jailbreak is one that is untethered, meaning that the user is not required to plug their device into their computer every time they reboot.

Of course, there are some risks in running the software. For one thing, Apple will void your warranty, which you will need if you need to replace the battery. µ

Thanks MucGumbo

I'm so glad you're telling me I'm uninformed, I had no idea. Maybe I should correct that by going only to "approved" places like cnn.com to get my news. I should just ignore important news like the Gary Mckinnon thing and the various bills that most major American websites and news station don't even think to cover.

Thanks for the heads-up, now gtfo and go hand with your More Informed friends.

Blah

Well I for one like my iPhone... But of course that is because it is jailbroken.. If uncle Steve is finally able to stop them from jailbreaking the iPhone then I will probably move to a android or something else.

In other words... I have a Iphone BECAUSE it IS jailbroken.

WOW!!!!

We certainly know Apple has arrived when it gets publicity in this trashy publication. Even funnier is the fact that a bunch of techie wannabees who have no idea what they're talking about post their inane drivel without having a clue of the reasoning behind Steve-o's moves. I'm not an Apple fanboi, but guys, do your homework before you open your pieholes. There is a reason Apple is a 200+ billion dollar market cap company. You are just an uninformed vocal minority.

Why Apple

I do agree with the previous comment, why people still buy the over priced products from apple, when there are cheaper alternatives available and without the leash.

Huh?

I'm still trying to figure out how much longer it's going to be before apple product fans stand up and remind 'Ol Stevie boy that once they drop their tons'o bucks on the counter Apple NO LONGER OWNS THE DEVICE! and that the consumer should be able to run whatever they want on said device.

Sadly. some people will continue to buy these products and just accept the leash and having papa Steve tell them what they can and can not do..

Me? I'm not buying his "stuff" partly for the leash bit, mostly cause there are less expensive options out on the market that'll do the same tasks.

Of course we all know that steve will be out to brick your phone if youre not careful with the next update.
They will give you the same line they always do, changes x and y so z are not compatible from your modified firmware (basebant, etc.). I wonder if the dev team can hack os4 so that it runs on 2g, finally they can show everyone what apple doesn't want to happen. Again. Maybe one day they will add a hard reset feature so you can be computer free. In other words you wont need a computer to restore your phone.
