FUSION GARAGE has announced the availability of its Joojoo tablet in the UK, and The INQUIRER went along to the launch for a walk-through of the Linux handheld device and obtained an exclusive demonstation video.
The company claims that the 12.1-inch tablet is the world's largest capacitive touchscreen device. Beneath the screen is an Intel 1.6GHz Atom processor and an Nvidia ION chipset. Like Apple's Ipad, there is no keyboard and the battery is not removable. But the similarities stop there, because the Joojoo is open.
Fusion Garage also plans to offer a 3G enabled version of the Joojoo within three months, according to the firm's chief executive, Chandra Rathakrishnan. µ

Nice try but no banana.
The Ecoore is bigger, heavier and more expensive than the iPad. You don't get 802.11n. Bluetooth is an optional extra. 3G is even more expensive than Apple's option. They won't even talk about battery life, but extrapolating from the battery life of the Asus EEE PC 1000H (which has a similar sized screen and Atom CPU) you should only get between 2 and 4 hours use out of it.
The worst problem with it though is that it runs full desktop operating systems (Windows 7 - which is an extra cost option, or Ubuntu). Why is that a problem you ask. They make heavy demands on the hardware while providing software that fails to capitalise on the touch interface. What you have is conventional tablet PC, a category that has been around for a while and has failed to gain traction for precisely those reasons.
Oh Apple, what a horrible plague you've unleashed upon the world. Manufacturers everywhere trying to jump on your lame product's bandwagon with even lamer imitations. Soon people everywhere will own these low-utility devices, purchased in a moment of weakness or stupidity, only to have them left disused on shelves and coffee tables. The cycle will be repeated.
Nice an' all, but I still don't know how I'd actually USE it. I have a laptop with a much nicer screen that folds out to reveal a proper keyboard - the keyboard protects the screen when folded in again. I also have a desktop PC and a quad tuner Media Center in the lounge (blow me, Mac zealots). Plus I have a BlackBerry. I suppose if I wanted to spunk away my worthless existence into the gaping hole that is the web, a tablet might make sense. Say, I could waste my entire spare time uploading messages here, couldn't I?
The internet's about to get noisier...
There is a lawsuit ongoing that could stop the sale of the JooJoo, and the Inquire knows this but is so incompetent that they do not even mention it.
Fusion Garage has a very tainted reputation if the internet is to be believed.
I personally would not buy anything from Chandra Rathakrishnan.
Try and google him and/or "crunchpad lawsuit".
You're a little late. Ekoore has had its ET10TA slate computer running Ubuntu on the market for about 6 weeks now. Not a prototype - actual product you can purchase. And yeah, you can get 3G wireless and GPS with it (both available since March).

ISN'T THIS THE TABLET THEY STOLE FROM THAT ONE GUY?
CHEEKY!
(I AM NOT VAN SMITH SO STOP SENSORING ME)
if it's an open platform based on linux then surely the source should be on there website and we can add the UI extentions too other linux touchscreen distros? I don't see the source on there site though. Wonder if someone will buy one and comment on GPL compliance.
it's not the problem of processor speed, but connection speed.
We can't really confirm by just looking at the video, but this thing looks bulky, less comfortable and portable than the iPad.
just how blinded by his own prejudices Lawrence is. The average member of the buying public couldn't give two hoots whether or not a system is open (Windows sells in vast quantities compared to Linux, why should this be otherwise?). They are much more interested in how much software they can get for a machine, how much battery life it has, how responsive it is etc.
Take a look at his own review of the iPad and measure the JooJoo by the same yardsticks. By his own criteria the JooJoo does badly. It's nearly a pound heavier than the iPad, it runs for about 1/3rd of the time on a battery charge, it costs the same as an entry level iPad, but comes with 1/4 of the flash memory, it isn't a phone, doesn't come with a 3G option and doesn't have a library of touch enabled applications that you can download.
There may be competition coming for the iPad from other manufacturers, but this plain and simple doesn't cut the mustard. You'd need to be a rabid fanboi to think otherwise.
Googles seems to load fast enough, maybe it's just yahoo that's slow? The interface seems ill adopted to the screen size, I'd like to see a toned down version of this on tablet running chrome/linux, hxxp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jhoWsHwU7w&feature=player_embedded.
I think it's running at a reasonable speed, besides its got full flash support and it's open for use with many other linux applications, even Windows apps too
Take a looks at what's happening between second markers; 27s to 48s - nothing - that's right, 20seconds to open what looks to be a yahoo homepage. No wonder the rest of the video is only showing pre-opened pages, and when he does try to open something else, he skips over to show something already stored in the graphics memory. Clearly not running the Atom anywhere near full speed...
