RAGE AGAINST THE IPAD has led to one user creating the Antipad, a device that features just a keyboard.
The device, originally a Lenovo X61T, has had its screen lopped off and replaced by a coin, which the user says acts as the WiFi antenna for the machine. As a perfect antithesis of the Ipad, it features merely a keyboard and the working gubbins of the X61T.
Underneath one of the best laptop keyboards around, there lies an Intel Core 2 Duo running at 1.6GHz coupled to 1GB RAM. The user has decided to keep things pretty much standard on the specification front, opting to stick with the 80GB hard drive, though he did add an "extended" battery which gives around five hours of run time. The original stylus still remains, though the lack of touchscreen has somewhat negated its usability.
The system currently runs Debian Linux but the user claims that loading Ubuntu results in a slightly better battery life. Either way, the whole shebang with the extended battery, weighs around 800 grams. Unlike the Ipad, however, it has peripheral ports, including a working VGA output, which given the lack of screen is pretty important.
The user says that like the Ipad, WiFi connectivity is a bit dodgy and depends a lot on the coin used. Nevertheless given that the device features USB ports and a PC Card slot, external antennas can easily be attached.
Apparently the whole thing took around 30 minutes to whip up, which might not be all that far fetched given that no real modifications were made to the main chassis. The relatively lean requirements of the Linux operating system mean that even with the almost archaic Intel processor and low RAM the system feels pretty nippy, and unlike the version of the Iphone OS that ships with the Ipad, it does multitasking and seemingly isn't effected by the insecurities in Adobe's Flash either.
So those looking for a tablet device with real compute capabilities, an impressive keyboard and unrestricted operating system choice and application access should go back to 2005 and consider the Lenovo X61T. µ
Good!
Now it only needs an Apple logo with a bite into it,
some crazy commercial spot where Steve Jobs "Approves The Device",
overprice it and give it an Idont-care-name;
And people from all over the world are going to buy it!!!!!
EVERYONE! We can be Apple! All of us!!!
Versus the Apple display with no keyboard, a keyboard with no display...
I got a Gigabyte M912 touchscreen PC, but it fell off my bicycle and either landed very hard or got clipped by a car: touch and screen are bent and don't work, but it does run otherwise - with an external monitor. But it ain't the same.
@Mark Green
yes, its on my desk, its also in my kitchen, its also in my living room, in my garage.....
its in my house , where ever I want to take it and wherever I want to place a tv/display.
what is it?
its basically a laptop without a display.
@dzx
yes, thats one hotty keyboard /pc combo for sure.The only drawback is , the Atom , which to me is like the Antichrist.
I want a proper(modern performance) computer , but it has to look like that EEE keyboard).It, doesn't have to have that display on the side either.
A laptop , without a display, sounds like a no brainer to me.
If you have to take it to a separate LCD to use it, probably on your computer desk, why the extended battery? Why can't you just plug it into the wall like the LCD monitor?
Unless the user is planning to carry a separate portable screen...
@pfromg
You mean like the EEE Keyboard? http://gizmodo.com/5124985/eee-keyboard-an-entire-touchscreen-home-theater-pc
jokes aside, I actually like that idea.
I really would buy something like this !
I mean , why does a laptop have to come with a screen? My laptop has never left our house and probably never will.
And ive no intention of ever buying a classical PC box again. a decent LCD monitor is cheep as chips.
what we are basically looking at , is a keyboard with a computer in it. Thats 8 hours of cable free computing. Add wireless hdmi support to it and im computing on my 50" plasma !
Come on Acer , sell me a laptop without a monitor , i'm standing in line already.
I have the same tablet, and let me tell you, this thing runs hot. As in, at full speed the case could reach 45-50 degree c. It doesn't help that Lenovo coupled the tight ventilation design with questionable fan parts.
After a few high-pitch whining fans issues, they quietly issued BIOS updates that turn off the fans for all but the most damning overheat. One would thing the most responsible thing to do is to replace the bad fans. But no, they prefer the cpu to run at 100c (It's a mobile cpu, but still).
GET A LIFE. IT'S FRIDAY.
THIS IS SO RETRO COOL I WANTS ONE. MUCH BETTER THAN IPADS
I think this place is getting even more vacuous....or is it just posting garbage to get a rise? Is that what its come to?
This is funny for about....well it's really not funny or clever....yeah....
TRULY, I PITY THE FOOL.
Hehehe, funny. But useless anyway, since I cannot use it while on the move.
and that thing looks more like a zx spectrum than a commodore 64 though ;)
That is ok, the iPad is useless generally
Laptop - Screen = Commodore 64
Useless without screen.
