BUILDER OF ITS OWN LINUX SERVERS Google has splashed out of Agnilux, a mysterious firm started by ex-Apple and PA Semi staffers.
We can confirm the acquisition of Agnilux," a Google spokeswoman said, but added, "We are providing no additional comment."
Little is known about Agnilux, and its web site is currently unavailable, that is, "coming soon". A cached version of the webpage tells us little more except the fact that it is an "early age startup", and moved offices during the summer of 2009.
The webpage also tells us that The name Agnilux is derived from agni - Sanskrit for fire - and lux - Latin for light - which doesn't help us either
Crunchbase describes it as a semiconductor company, and lists staffers including Mark Hayter and Amarjit Gill as its chief operating officer and chief executive, respectively. Both of them were at PA Semi and left after its acquisition by Apple.
In February a blog report at the New York Times suggested that the firm was developing some sort of server, possibly in conjunction with Cisco. µ
An old trick in the valley if you are somebody who is considered as a worthy asset and want to make a big payday is to make a small start up! You don't have to hire many peoples or produce anything more than a few PR release than you just wait for XYZ to make you an offer. If XYZ want you bad enough they buy your empty start up for more than it worth if you agree to work for them for a while. If you're an ahole the peoples you hire are left dangling with no job if you're not you either take care of them with severance package or get XYZ to also hire them.
I think Google may be planning to build there own data center equipment, computers, net books, etc. in house. Possibly to have better control of the overall design/build, cost and secrecy with specific equipment used in their DCs.
