Adobe strikes back against Apple

Not mincing words
Wed Apr 21 2010, 11:19

ADOBE HAS FIRED BACK in a war of words with Apple, with one of its lead developers wading into Jobs' Mob.

Writing in his blog, Mike Chambers said that Apple's new draft of its Iphone developer programme license means that Apple will remove existing content and applications created with Flash CS5 from the Itunes store and ban all future programs from being sold there.

Chambers said that Adobe will be shipping the ability to target the Iphone and Ipad in Flash CS5. However, it is not currently planning any additional investments in that feature.

You can see how angry he is by reading between the lines. Chambers said that Adobe based the entire development cycle of Flash CS5 around with Jobs' Mob's licensing terms only to be shafted by the cappuccino outfit at the last minute.

He listed a few of Jobs' more autocratic recent decisions including changing Apple's licensing terms to essentially prohibit ad networks other than its own on the Iphone.

Chambers said that what was really in Jobs' mind was nothing about improving standards but to kill off any chance of cross browser, platform and device development.

Apple wants to tie developers down to its platform, and restrict their options to make it difficult for developers to target other platforms.

He does not regret wasting all that time and money making Flash work on the Iphone. Chambers said that it pours cold water on any attempts by Apple to claim that Adobe could not get it to work.

He said that the teams implemented features, such as hardware acceleration and ahead of time compilation, that it can use on other devices and platforms.

"Fortunately, the Iphone isn't the only game in town. Android based phones have been doing well behind the success of the Motorola Droid and Nexus One, and there are a number of Android based tablets slated to be released this year," Chambers said.

Jobs' bizarre anti-Flash posturing has actually thrust Adobe firmly into the hands of Google.

But Chambers said that the industry was squaring up for a fight between the more open platform models and the closed, locked down environment that Apple uses. He thinks that ultimately open platforms will win.

However Apple's own figures seem to indicate that there are lots of dumb people out there who like Steve Jobs to tell them what to do. µ

Finally

Finally an artikle that doesnt try to defend everything Apple does. (or doesn't do)

Guess it takes a free mind to recognize the truth.

Not a brainwashed / shackeled one.

Or simply a lost one. :-)

Cancel CS for Mac.

I would.

let an entire ownership line wither and die and be forced to buy pcs.

without cs it would only really be FCP that required a mac pro or a 30" screen.

can I just say - fuck you jobs. I am not programming in that shitty object c nonsense. its worse than looking at PHP.

.net

Apples says Adobe will create crappy reheated code. I think that is not true. .Net and C++ as a parallel.

Apple wants to cash in on their own stuff.

Both are ruthless cut throats.

They make a nice pair.

Adobe stood at Apple's side?

you have to be kidding me. Adobe have spent their time trying to shaft Apple.

First they tried to charge an arm and a leg for Type 1 fonts, so Apple and Microsoft had to combine to push TrueType and break that monopoly.

Then they tried to shaft Apple with licensing fees for Display PostScript (which NeXT was based on), so Apple had to re-engineer OS X to work around that.

Then they were one of the companies who said no to moving direct to the Cocoa APIs, so Apple had to come up with the Carbon compatibility libraries, and they were still among the last major software companies to port to OS X.

Photoshop for the Mac has FINALY been ported to Cocoa as of CS5 because Apple won't support 64 bit Carbon GUIs, and Apple had to put up with only having a 32 bit version of CS4 while Windows users got full 64 bit.

Flash support on OS X has been little short of pitiful. It's buggy, slow and a resource hog. Talk is that Adobe have only one developer assigned to it, and he's both part time and a not an expert on the platform.

After all that Adobe are upset when Apple won't let people develop using their own closed platform.

Jobs is an a$$

At one time, when Apple was struggling and had no market share, there was only one company that stood by their side and continued development of good mainstream software to run on their computers. That was Adobe. Now that Apple is back on their feet, partly in thanks to Adobe, they've stabbed them in the back.

it's not only adobe

it's all 3rd party compilers and so on. there's nothing wrong about it. if i recall correctly this has been done some time ago when apple asked devs to use xcode (not sure about this) and some time later they switched platforms which for devs who worked with suggested tools was very easy. maybe this is what's gonna happen soon. Apple has every right to block 3rd party apps, it's their platform, their SDK, their AppStore and their R&D.

Back on topic

Other than the bunch of fanbois parroting about how great Apple is, how wrong Farnell is, etc etc etc, maybe it'd be better to actually comment on the content of the article?

The situation is that Adobe was attempting to correct an issue with the iPhone (the lack of flash), but got shafted at the last minute, and has decided that giving Apple compatibility a high priority might not be a good idea.

Perhaps I'm biased in the favour of more open systems (hell, I think Symbian is a pretty good system, with its qt-based interface), but doesn't this appear to be a rather logical conclusion.

Hey, it could be worse: http://www.bbspot.com/News/2010/04/adobe-apple-cs5.html

History repeats itself...

I remember growing up in the age of the personal computer, and I remember how badly I wanted an Apple IIe. It had all the bells and whistles and played really cool games… Alas, it was never to be, I couldn’t afford one… A funny thing happen though, over a few years, IBM (or better known today as the “PC”) took over… some might say it was short sightedness on Apple’s part (did not understand how business users would allow for mass production, which in turn leads to economies of scale and decreased production costs of individual computers, etc, etc…) But it was really the “closed” system that “did Apple in” (although they are still around and making a ton of money, so maybe I should say made them a “niche market”) and if you look at what happen to “IBM.” They did not become “the end all of end all” PC companies (Market Cap of IBM – 169B USD, where Apples has a Market Cap of 233B USD.) So, for all the bitching that goes on here about the reporting (which I find hilarious) – the end result is this and no amount of bitching will change this… Apple is one of the best companies in the world at having a vision for technology and implementing that vision, the stuff they do is cutting edge and cool… But in the long term, the rest of the world catches up. The reason the rest of the world catches up is an “open” system allows the “whole entire rest of the world” to compete with Apple… God love’n but no one can beat that… that said, it takes 5-10 years to do it… and during that 5-10 years it’s worth it for the excellent user experience (except I have not been pleased with AT&T, so I don’t have an Iphone) that people are willing to pay for… “I love my Ipod.” Don’t worry, Nick, you will be right eventually…

Work better...

Yeah, yeah, Macs work better... in your mind only. In reality they work typically, nothing special.

And that only applies when they are in tip-top shape. When they go out of that, there is almost nothing you can do.

Except to do what Jobs wants you to do - go buy another one :) Which is idiotic, they are more complicated machines than that, not a one-button-gadgets. So no, it is not normal to go buy another one just because yours is just cluttered. But a lot of people do this unfortunately.

iFeelings

Please don't say anything bad about apple. They are the nicest company ever and always do the right thing.

Before any action is taken in apple they use the ultimate safeguard in the form of the question "What would Jesus do?" & that is why every turd they touch turns to gold.

Criticism should be reserved for other, evil companies, like microsoft because they are so much different than apple.

Now, I'm trying to figure out what to do more with this iPad besides let my cat paw at it...he's never been this happy.

Here come the fan bois!

I enjoy every Apple article that portrays Apple in a negative light as it really upsets the disciples of the great Apple god Steve Jobs.

Enjoy your locked in platform, guessing soon Apple will start to filter the internet also to provide a better "user experience" by removing anything critical of them.

It Works

All sorts of people attack Apple for all sorts of reasons - why?

I suspect jealousy - the reason most of us use iMacs etc is that they work better - that's a fact.

Must be earnings season

Negative article on the same day as Apple's (blowaway) earnings... must be Nick....

Yup, once again Apple demolishes the estimates/predictions (and is up over 5% in after hours)... so Nick breaks out a typical whatever he can find article..

As always, thanks to the integrity at the INQ..... as oppose to a site which just chooses to publish personal vendettas...
