Next Ipad might get an OLED panel

Or maybe not
Mon Apr 19 2010, 09:34

MAKER OF BRIGHTLY COLOURED GADGETS Apple apparently is going to stick an OLED display on its next generation Ipad.

Digitimes has talked with component makers and claims that the second generation Ipad will use the same design concept as the Iphone 4G.

This is despite the cost of OLED panels being thought to be too high for Apple to bung one into the Ipad.

It is possible that by the time Apple's second generation Ipad gets produced the prices of OLED displays will have fallen. Major panel makers are investing more in OLED production, with Samsung being the leader in OLED capacity. LG has just bought Kodak's OLED division last year, while AU Optronics (AUO) plans to restart its OLED production in 2011.

All this added capacity could cause OLED panel prices to drop and make an OLED display more price friendly for the Ipad, the Taiwanese industry rag claims.

However Digitimes' own in-house analyst, Mingchi Kuo doubts that this is possible. He points out that the high price of OLED panels will still be the major obstacle for their adoption in the Ipad in 2011.

The current price of the 9.7-inch LCD panel for the Ipad is about $60 to $70, but the price of a 9.7-inch OLED panel is about $500.

Kuo said the price gap is unlikely to narrow significantly between now and any second generation Ipad launch. µ

too expensive for gen 2

For gen 2, oled is too expensive. For gen 3, maybe. Oled would do a lot to make the ipad lighter which would make the ipad experience substantially nicer.

Gen2 also getting Flux Capacitor?!?

Continuing in the spirit of apple media fanbois who obviously think the newest Uber-iPod Touch is the key to mankind's ultimate happiness.....

Rumors are swirling on the internet by credible wannabe Apple media-insiders that the next Gen Ipad will also feature new hardware and an iPad-exclusive revision of Apple's Time Machine App. iPad users will now be able to *actually* travel through time using a power-sipping version of it's newly designed IFC, "Integrated Flux Capacitor" capable of initiating time-travel while generating a portable device-friendly 850 megawatts of power!

To support this new feature, insiders speculate that the next iPad will be powered by tapping into a newly discovered radiation field, Apple calls AAW "Apple Alpha Waves". It appears Job's and Co. have found a way to "plug-in" to the global grid of radiant thought-energy emanating from users unfailing belief and smugness in Apple's perceived superiority and security.

In a sidenote, The Vatican is reported to be closely monitoring AAW's recent growth as Apple may relegate Prayer to #2 market share position in spiritual energy commodities.

You heard it on theInquirer FIRST, guys!

STOP with iPad

STOP!!!!

i can't bear anymore to see so many articles on something mostly useless to anybody except to who has plenty of money to waste and to IT illiterate.

Write something more interesting.

P.s. To APPLE spin-doctors, you are dangerously near to the limit of over-exposure of your product. If you continue you will face VISTA effect

Display is iPad's weakness

So many articles mention that the iPad is going to compete with the Kindle as a book reader. Not So. Most people won't read a book on a LCD screen: it's tiring to the eyes and unusable in bright light. The Kindle has a better but far from perfect solution, with e-paper.

Will OLED be better? Remains to be seen. OLED has been the next-big-thing for how long? Like other light-emitting display, OLED is worthless in bright light.

My hopes are on the new Mirasol color e-paper:

But is it fast enough for games?
