MySQL becomes Oracle's Microsoft killer

Open source database might have a use after all
Wed Apr 14 2010, 10:41

WHEN ORACLE bought Sun there was a fear that it would not be interested in MySQL. However now it seems that Oracle has found a use for the software as a cheap device to take on Microsoft.

Oracle said that it will boost investment in the widely used open-source database. Edward Screven, Oracle's chief corporate architect, told Reuters that the company will add new functions to the software and improve its performance.

Oracle thinks that it can boost overall database sales by making MySQL more competitive with Microsoft's SQL Server.

Its cunning plan is to use its Oracle Database as a more high-end program for corporations and government agencies. This will be targeted at IBM's DB2.

MySQL could be used to sell to small to mid-sized businesses and companies running websites. Its number one enemy is SQL Server.

The general feeling is that while the two products are similar, Oracle has to do a bit more work to make sure MySQL is as robust as the Vole's, which has more features.

Screven said Oracle has already started adding new features to MySQL and will be announcing them soon. µ

Good idea

MySQL is very useful now and MySQL Workbench is a very nice UI. If features like instances were added, and something like Query Analyzer were added then MySQL would be a good competitor for SQL Server.

Just imagine, one globocorp giving away quality software in order to hurt another globocorp. Isn't the market fantastic?

@bob

MySQL is already better than the express edition. While the MySQL software is free it lacks some of the more key elements of SQL Server so for those extras, like SQL Agent, people are willing to put money in MicroSoft's coffers.
