AOL will sell or shut down Bebo
ALSO RAN Bebo will be one of the first casualties of social notworking competition, with AOL set to either sell it off or just close it down.
This comes only a couple of years after AOL bought Bebo for $850 million to compete with Facebook and MySpace. The news was broken in an email to AOL employees, with the full content of the memo printed in the Silicon Valley Insider.
AOL's Jon Brod said, "As we evaluate our portfolio of brands against our strategy, it is clear that social networking is a space with heavy competition, and where scale defines success.
"Bebo, unfortunately, is a business that has been declining and, as a result, would require significant investment in order to compete in the competitive social networking space.
"AOL is not in a position at this time to further fund and support Bebo in pursuing a turnaround in social networking."
Bebo always had a tough battle to compete with the all-conquering Facebook, and with a lack of funding from AOL it had an impossible task. Even MySpace, with the backing of Rupert Murdoch, is having its own difficulties and falling behind in the social notworking race.
Its target base of younger teenagers was great for Bebo at its peak, but as Facebook has grown in size and funding support even this youth audience has flocked to a community where 'everybody' can be connected. µ

facebook is fun. more apps and games than bebo. it's actually quite easy to use once you get the hang of it.

I've had a bebo for about three years now, and I've always loved it. It's always been a great way to talk with your friends. It is a controlled and safe site, very popular with both the younger and older crowd. In my opinion, I don't think it should close. It should be bought, most people enjoy bebo way more then other sites. It shouldn't shut down.
All the little kids out there that are moaning about Facebook will realise when they get older that Facebook is allot better.. I have my bebo account since 2006 and just this year I have moved over to Facebook because bebo is simply trying to be something its not and changing too much.. the only people that are "addicted" to bebo these day's are the kids that don't even know what the old bebo was like, bet if they did they'd be moved to Facebook by now also... The only thing I'll be missing about bebo is all the old memories and pictures I have on it.. RIP bebo, I'll never forget you (Y)

I'm from Ireland and yes, as agreed by Emma we need a social networking site considering all we get is rain.
But on the other hand it's Bebos fault. Facebook got the ads it needed such as being on the radio, celebrities telling them to add them on Facebook etc. It was only a matter of time until it happened.
However Facebook have such a shite contact site etc. My Facebook got disabled and I haven't been on it for two weeks now because of the stupid Americans not responding to my e-mails, whereas with Bebo they replied within two days and gave me my account back.
All that's left on Bebo is 12 year olds that can't type properly and like to capitalise every letter. AOL is a bitch for not funding them but hey ho, considering Bebo copied off Facebooks farmville and myspaces instant chat it's blantantly their own fault. Just shows that everyone lacks originality now a' days.
And thanks to whoever posted that link above. Comments there managed to lower my opinion of social networking, and that's no mean feat.
If the english skills of some contributors here are anything to go by, the internet will be a better place when they've lost another place to post their unreadable drivel.

Being a fan and user of bebo for years i have to admit i think it has out lived its time. Facebook seems to be taking over slowly it seems to be the way forward as it integrates both a Bebo and Twitter like function into each other.
I have to say it would be a shame to see it go but maybe its just time?
there is nooooo way they can shut down bebo! sell it if you have to, but really most bebo memembers are members because they hate facebook, because facebook is boring! i have a facebook and there is nothing to do apart from "farmville" which i find completely pointless! i go on bebo everyday, and have done for the best part fo two years! don't shut down the site because more people use facebook, or bebo isnt talked about on tv like facebook! shut down bebo and there is no competetion in the social networking market. bebo is the best networking site out there, and if what i've heard that facebook will start chaarging is truw, then bebo will have a huge boost in users!

Ever since bebo changed their profile layout people have been leaving the site and joing facebook and myspace which have lots more to offer to their users than bebo. I suppose it's just 'survival of the fittest' with these social networking sites.
