Google has a fancy machine learning system
ROBOTICS DEVELOPER Google has revealed details of its large-scale machine learning system that has been in development for several years.
A system that could process large quantities of data would be able to help "immensely" in translation and information retrieval, and Google codenamed this project 'Seti', tipping a hat to the search for extraterrestrial intelligence as it "searches for signals in a large space."
It scales to massive data sets and is now one of the most broadly used Google classification systems. Google said that Seti's accuracy is "pretty decent" and that the size of the data sets that it can be used on is typically more than that seen in academia.
Simon Tong of Google Research said that there were mistakes made in the process of designing Seti and that it wasn't just accuracy that was important. Seti had to be easy to use and reliable.
He said, "Seti is typically used in places where a machine learning system will provide a significant improvement in accuracy over the existing system."
But he admitted that machine learning systems, although beneficial, don't work all the time. This is because it added "complexity, opacity and unpredictability to a system. In reality, simpler techniques are sometimes good enough for the task at hand."
"And in the long run, the extra effort that would have been spent integrating, maintaining and diagnosing issues with a live machine learning system could be spent on other ways of improving the system instead." µ
