Microsoft ready to out its social notworking phones

If you can't beat 'em
Tue Apr 06 2010, 17:33

BUMBLING MOBILE DEVELOPER Microsoft will introduce a line of devices centred on social notworking.

The creator of Windows Mobile has seemingly decided to ditch all aspirations of being seen as a credible threat to Apple and Google and instead gone for the teen vote, planning to show off the fruits of its "Pink" project next week.

That project was in partnership with US network Verizon, which happens to be part owned by Vodafone. The devices, according to the WSJ, are supposed to hit the stores later this month, and will be confined to the US.

Microsoft is, in a manner of speaking, following the lead of Google, which got into the mobile handset game after partnering with device maker HTC to produce the Nexus One. However, unlike the Nexus One, which was used to showcase the technological prowess of Android 2.1 coupled to the latest hardware, these devices are unlikely to have anything cutting edge about them.

By plumping to centre these devices around social notworking, parallels can be drawn to Motorola. At the time the all but written off handset manufacturer managed to conjour up the Dext, a device that is widely cited as the cornerstone of the firm's latest rivival. The only problem for Microsoft, Verizon and Sharp; maker of the devices, is that under the fancy interface and social notworking fluff of the Dext, there lay a pukka operating system, Android.

To make matters worse, it's highly unlikely these devices will feature Windows Mobile 7. However those who base their lives around social notworking are hardly likely to care about the underlying functionality of their devices, just as long as they can send pointless thoughts to their legions of fans.

For Microsoft, any way of reversing the worsening position of its mobile platform must be worth a gamble. The latest figures from industry thumb twiddlers, Comscore, highlight the desperate plight of Windows Mobile. The figures show a slump of four per cent for Windows Mobile in the quarter leading up to February 2010. Fruit themed toymaker Apple didn't fare too well either, dropping 0.1 per cent, with Google showing the biggest growth, 5.2 per cent.

Project Pink may be seen a weak gambit in Microsoft's attempts to woo back customers who had given up on Windows Mobile. Unless the firm can back it up with some real substance in the very near future, it's likely that the Vole will see its share of mobile market slip off the chart completely. µ

Microsoft can do no right.

Cassy this is the INQ. Anything Microsoft ever produces is the evil spawn of satin, blue screens, isnt cool, and sucks. Even though anyone from the INQ never tested it, seen it, or even tried Windows 7. In fact its a job requirement to work for theINQ you must hate anything Microsoft says or does. Just ignore that theINQ is an ASP based website. Be surprised it doesn't blue screen your browser when you come here. I'm sure the staff if surprised their site is even up and running when Linux would be so much more reliable.

Good or normal?

So is this a good phone? They make it out to be doomed before its been tried. I like usable phones though, My Net10 Samsung 451c is great for texting especially with the sliding keyboard and 5c texts. Cheap and it works so that makes me happy. Think ill stick to my Net10 and hear how people rate it.

Android is a pukka OS? :-P

I just switched to a Dext and it seems pretty flexible compared to an iphone (widgets on desktop). The Happenings widget is pretty cool for keeping track of your social happenings, and being able to multitask w/ the Android OS is a big reason for this...

You should elaborate on why you said pukka or this is a pretty biased article :-P

Droid beat iPhone and WinMo7 Beats Blackberry

Those looking for the iPhone killer can find it in Droid.

iPhone
AT&T is their network (FAIL)
130,000 apps (You only need at most 50 good ones.)
Horrible security

Droid
Verizon is their network (WIN)
30,000 Apps (You only need at most 50 good ones.) In a see of 30,000 you have that answer.
Flash (WIN)
No Apple Censorship (Win)

Microsoft Mo7 abandons all previous stuff which is what was killing them. Its tightly integrated with Exchange/Microsoft's product suits. Doesn't require you to buy additional servers like Blackberry or iPhone to incorporate into a companies infrastructure and doesn't add any additional cost for support and equipment in the process. Corporate world Windows Mobile 7 offers more for less.

Windows Mobile 7 is a Blackberry killer first and since most people like the ZuneHD interface over the iPod/iPhone interface it stands to chip away at the iPhone market share just like droid is doing.

Busting that bubble Droid sales are just about to exceed iPhone sales. Iphone still has the market share but within the next month or two the iPhone will be the second fastest selling phone. This is why Apple is rushing to get iPhone 4.0 and iPhoneHD because they are about to be outdone.

Horray, now people can tweet and drive

Facebook became plain annoying when people started sending me pigs and flowers and asking for 6 more people to build a chicken coup. Now they can farm all day at work without getting busted for using the office 'net.

Ballmer Must Be Mad

Microsoft will have 3 mobile operating systems on the market at the same time. WinMo, WinPho7, and Pink. Each one incompatible, and incapable of running the applications of the other. They will all fail.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
