There's a significant school of thought that... Windows' success happened because of Solitaire - Wendy M. Grossman
MOZILLA'S FIRST QUARTERLY analyst report has revealed a number of interesting metrics about the open source Firefox browser, particularly the fact that it has a thirty per cent market share.
The firm's report (PDF) captures the state of the Internet 'through its own eyes', and it plans to release four a year. It explained, "We're a global community with more than 350 million people around the world using the Firefox Web browser. While we are careful to ensure the data we collect and metrics we track are fairly limited, we feel compelled to share and evangelise the little wisdom we're able to extract from our numbers."
Included in its statistics are the facts that Firefox, Mozilla's web browser, appears to have a global market share of approximately thirty per cent, has seen the most user growth in Russia, and South Americans are most likely to personalise their application. Meanwhile, people in Antartica are most likely to use plug-ins. Plug in heaters, too, we reckon.
Those who capitalise on the browser's tabs feature might be impressed to know that in one instance a user was able to work with 600 different tabs open. Typically users have just two or three tabs open, though.
Most of the browser's users can be found in Europe, where it has just under forty per cent of the market. In South America it claims just over 31 per cent, and in both the US and Asia it has around 26 per cent.
Did we mention that Mozilla claims some 350 million users worldwide? µ
Others too give out reports that things are going well for diversity, in that IE is dwindling.
It's just a damn shame that for some reason many asian companies now started to push activex based utilities, and you have to wonder: are they mad? They had decades of virus-pain thanks to activex, and it only works in IE and NOW they start to push it again? I guess the activex coders all got laid off from other places and ended in positions that they let them at computers again, sigh.
Microsoft's evil Internet Exploiter browser is finally falling. It was only ever developed so that Microsoft could rule the internet, using its own proprietary formats to oust HTML. Ballmer's evil plan is now falling apart.
Is there some new drug going around?
I also agree. Mozilla is an awful O.S. I just formatted my HDD, put Mozilla on and nothing happens. It doesn't even boot.
Strange.
I couldn't agree more.
And James Lucas, what did you smoke for lunch buddy? Pass that round this way will ya?
350 million people. Big friggin deal. I hate that stupid O.S.
'Market share' is just the name they use to try to evaluate popularity, visibility, usage...
I could not care what 'number' it is, but it is obvious - the few that know opera are soon put off by bugs, missing stuff, bad looks, and bad treatment at the forums... Even those new to computers Know that Firefox is the one to get...
Long time Opera fan here, changing to Firefox... here is why...
- you want to try one of your old skins, that work great on opera 10.1...
it gives 'black squares' and other odd effects on 10.5...
OK, its old, lets look at the latest skins on the website....
you find it gets worse, now a lot of text has disappeared from the settings menu!!
you normally just type 'bbc' in Firefox to get bbc.co.uk.... (try it! :) )
You try this in Opera 10.5 - It searches google for BBC !!! why would it do that, when there is a 'google search bar' right next to it???
OK, maybe I did it wrong.. no, I type in the full URL, it does not search, it gets the website... WTF???
there is also a good function for URLs on the Inq, I just select a piece of text in 10.1, and 'goto URL' :) it just goes there, no fussing about with copy & paste! :)
so I find 'BBC' in 10.5, and 'goto URL' - surely that will work properly???
NO! it searches for BBC again.... do you see my problem now??
And Opera users looking in - want a good session manager??? you wont **believe** how good this is!!! :)

Internet Exploder already had an unfair advantage being bundled with M$, so I discount any IE market share in the first place. Normally, you have people using it to run Windows update first, or even to download another browser you have to use it. So yeah, IE will go down the tubes along with M$.
I'm hoping Chrome catches on, myself.
What you really need to consider is the fact that a lot of work machines etc have Internet Exploder installed by default but are not used by people for web browsing.
If you took all the business machines out and just surveyed the machines that are actually used by people day-to-day for web browsing, I think you would find Firefox had a MUCH bigger percentage. I would bet my salary on it.
Mozilla is a general term and not equal to firefox perse.
Seamonkey for instance is also labeled as mozilla.
Good work FF.
I can only hope that firefox & Opera gain more market share in the face of IE. It might be trying to walk a straight line but we all know it has bullied it's crooked ways for a very long time in the past.
Kill IE for the wrong doings vs. Netscape.
