Intel and Nokia open up Meego

Developer buffet

INTEL AND NOKIA have released to the public their joint project known as Meego.

In what is announced by the companies as the latest step in the full merger of their Maemo and Moblin Linux-based operating systems for mobile Internet devices, the developer community is being invited to an open source buffet.

As of today developers can start playing around with the distribution infrastructure as well as anything from the kernel all the way up to the middleware, which should be enough to get people interested and build a solid community on, reckons Imad Sousou, Director of Intel's Open Source Technology Center.

We dare compare this to something that hasn't been seen since the days of EPOC. Meego is effectively looking for developers from all walks of life that can find new ways to put its OS to use.

The most important part is that developers finally can find the downloadable software images, including USB-bootable versions, available from the Meego website that can support the Nokia N900, Atom-based netbooks and even Atom-based handsets.

A first distribution of Meego is expected to be ready by May, said Intel's Sousou, but more information is to come in the next few days. Stay tuned if you're a Meego buff in the making.
