CHIP AND TOUCHSCREEN MAKER Elan Microelectronics has asked the US International Trade Commission (ITC) to ban the import and sale of Apple's Ipad.
According to Elan, the Ipad is packed full of patent infringing technology that was not invented by Steve Jobs. The complaint asks the ITC to investigate whether Apple's products infringe upon patents held by Elan.
So far the ITC has yet to rule on the request and it is unlikely that it will stop the appearance of the Ipad in the US later this month.
Elan sued Apple last April in US District Court, alleging infringement of two touchscreen technology patents by Apple products including the Macbook, Iphone and Ipod Touch.
The ITC complaint also requests that the ITC ban the sale and importation of Apple products including the Iphone and Ipod Touch. Since the Ipad is just a giant Ipod Touch it is likely that it will be included in any import ban. µ
@ 'All people who make comments like the first comment'
This website's job is to report information to it's readers. Not all information reported is always 0-day info. Perhaps the infraction was filed in April 2009. But that doesn't make it any less relevant now, and the fact that it was leading up to the release of the iPad made it even more relevant.
Perhaps YOU knew about the events from a year ago, or maybe you read this article the other day, and then went "googling" around trying to find ways to aid your personal vendetta to dis-credit Nick Farrell (whom which you're obviously jealous of since you're NOT a journalist with a large audience and are reduced to bashing him in comments to try and get attention) but there are many people who probably didn't know about it that do now.
Perhaps if the INQ readers read YOUR website, you had an article last year that told them about it, but they probably DON'T read your website because it either (a)fails to exist, (b)is garbage, or (c)no one knows it exists.
One of the great things about the internet is you can read multiple points of views and do your OWN research, as not to believe everything you read and to go find all the facts.
I read CNNmoney, CNBC, MarketWatch, WSJ, almost daily and read articles by people talking about market expectations that don't happen. I see daily sports news about possible trade scenarios that never work out. Bottom line, when it comes to news, there are facts and opinions. Once you become an adult, MAYBE you'll be able to separate the two, and if you think you already can, and you just don't like Nick Farrell, then I got an idea... don't read his articles and don't comment on them, because i don't think Nick or lots of people really care what you think anyway because you are nobody significant, and if you were, then you're posting anonymously and obviously are a nerd that got beat up a lot as a kid.
P.S. you suck at life
Then again, it might not.
Hey Nick, when are you going to give us your review on the iPad?
(for a moment there I forgot you had a hate on)
Been reading about it this morning, many of the high profile tech journalists seem to really like the giant iPhone.
Never thought I would consider a tablet of any kind, but I'm starting to see the practicality and usefulness of a device like the iPad for my personal needs, am considering purchasing one, maybe this fall.
Nik, are you commenting on your own stories again?
hey, I like Nik Farrells articles. They aren't all dry and boring and sucking up to the "latest fad" garbage like other news sites like registers. One of the few news sites I know that aren't pushing propaganda. <cough
I think you misspelt your last initial. It should be J not T. Nice try though.
Nick's favourite hallmark.
Elan STARTED a case against Apple back in April 2009, but the wheels of US justice grind slowly and the case has yet to come to trial. Wether Elan's patents will be found valid or applicable is by no means certain. Synoptics demonstrated capitative touch LCD screens back in 2001 for example, roughly 2 years before the patent applications, so there is prior art.
The FTC like to wait for the courts to decide before they do anything, so for the moment this is just sabre rattling by Elan's lawyers.
