RED-BAITING INTERNET OUTFIT Google has confirmed that China is partially blocking its mobile services, in a possible case of a big Communist child throwing its toys out of the pram.
According to a summary of Google's service accessibility, its mobile Internet services have been partially blocked in China. Reports state that Google isn't sure whether these problems will continue.
Google hasn't made it clear what the reason is, although guesses include government interference or blocks by telecom companies or organisations sympathetic to the state. It could even be just a simple technical problem.
But it does seem likely that it could be a tit-for-tat move considering that Google moved its mainland search engine for China to Hong Kong just last week to avoid censorship restrictions.
There have been unconfirmed reports that China's search results filtering has become more stringent since Google's move, but this looks like the first case where actual blocking might have taken place.
If it is indeed a move on the part of the mainland Chinese authorities, then mobiles are a good target as they hold the most long-term potential for growth when it comes to networking China's population of over 1.3 billion.
However, search, news and images have not suffered outright blocking by China in this way. Youtube, Blogger and some websites are being blocked, but this was already the case before Google pulled its search engine out of the country. µ
Google is putting on a show because they held such a small share in China. If they really wanted to show the world that they mean business they would leave China completely (i.e. move their software development out of China as well). This is just a PR stunt and they are more than happy keeping their cheaper labour.
Looks like as a business dispute. Google is not a charity.
It makes business by selling advertisement. Presumably,
sales were not good, and it try to negotiate with Chinese
Government for preferences. Negotiations collapsed and it
decided to pull out. But for some reason it decided to play
an anti-Chinese card. Somebody broke gmail account of persons
called dissident. To acknowledge that this is a flaw of Google
security? No! Instead, google accuse the government. Where are
proofs? Ha! Who needs proofs nowadays. They told the it was
the government and everybody swallowed it. Be prepared that
next time they'll say it was YOU.
Seems we have another piece of news strongly voicing conjecture as near fact... Google didn't confirm squat, and shortly after you wrote this they have stated that a change resulting in the text rfia being added to the url of search results made the chinese firewalls associate them with radio free asia which has long been blocked.
If I were Google I would make some sort of world wide proxy servers service just to make the great firewall of China useless. Of course one must think of ways to prevent the Chinese from blocking it also.
Hmmm... E-mail attacks against gmail users, they just happen to be dissidents of the Chinese government... censorship of the news, because the citizens are not "able" to handle the world. Yea, I can see where you might think google does not have the right to complain… take another conformity pill…
Yes. The problem is Google won't filter search[for the Chinese government].
When Google complained to US congress I suddenly realized it was just like a spoilt crying boy creaming the "unfair treatment" he got from other's home where he still has 5 companies operating. But what is it? It's just the same "treatment" McDonald would get if it sold Big Mac with beef in India.
