Microsoft is too liberal

Security should be tighter
Tue Mar 30 2010, 09:52

MOST OF THE PROBLEMS of Microsoft's Windows security could be solved if it did not let users do whatever they like.

That's the conclusion of a study by Beyondtrust, which said that Voleware gives too many privileges to users that if were removed would make computers nearly impossible to hack.

Beyondtrust had a look at every security glitch that the Vole has found over the recent years and found that removing administration rights would plug 90 per cent of critical Windows 7 vulnerabilities. It would also make it difficult to exploit all Microsoft Office vulnerabilities and 94 per cent of all Internet Explorer vulnerabilities from last year.

The outfit said that 64 per cent of Microsoft vulnerabilities reported in 2009 could be mitigated by giving users fewer privileges.

However Steve Kelley, executive vice president of corporate development at Beyondtrust, said that IT lockdowns tend to bring business productivity to a halt. So it is not necessarily an option.

You can see the full report here. µ

Um, isn't that what UAC was?

Isn't that was UAC was meant to do? Everyone hated it, and worked extra hard to disable it.

The fact of the matter is that users run in Administrator modes because it is simply less of a hassle. Apps run correctly (or at all), you don't have to enter in admin passwords all the time, and you have the freedom to do what you want, or need. It's a holdover from the DOS and Windows 9x days, and unfortunately, apps and such are designed around that paradigm.

This is like saying you can have peace in Iraq by enforcing a new police state and constant curfews. Well yeah, you can, but you're not going to do much else.

Ultimate security solution

If you switch off and unplug your computer system from power socket, it will be very secure. You will not be able to use it, but it is small side effect ;)

Unplug it...

The way Microsoft has implemented its UAC, any further lockdowns would render a Windows PC useless.

Another equally-viable option would be to just unplug the computer (this has the additional advantage of saving power as compared to the first option of having your computer gobbling power AND being useless).

Of course, a third option could be to just install some OS that does a better job of implementing user account security (and OS security, such as any version of Linux).

Microsoft is not Apple

"MOST OF THE PROBLEMS of Microsoft's Windows security could be solved if it did not let users do whatever they like."

If they did that, they would not be Microsoft, but Apple and one of those is one is too many. And Apple doesn't even have any security.. Not really.
